Wet Birds Trials and Tribulation

Bird Watching During Rain Storms

Birds go to bed hungry when not able to fly, finding food during heavy rain season is a cumbersome time moving freely in flight, perched up on trees or finding somewhere to rest the wary bird still has to forage for sustenance.

Yellow-billed kite sitting upright for best run-off, facing the rain head on, drenched!

Some feed on flying insects like our nightjars, flycatchers, swallows, irioles, most will make a catch find a tree and then enjoy the meal like my kingfisher, hoopoes, woodpeckers, shrikes and more.

2254-Shrike.JPG

Shrike directly after heavy storm appears to see what insects are about, normally flying ants.

Come rain or shine, unable to change feathers to suit different weather the birds go out to find what is available.... Unless of course you are a duck, goose, pelican or similar primed for water presenting no problem whatsoever!

Many birds hold air pockets within the feathers, birds will wash in rivers, ponds or bird baths then meticulously dry them in the sun and preen ready for flight, but not what about those thunder storms that lash the skies?

Light rains birds may fluff out and shake the excess water off, heavy rains seek shelter under bushes or in trees an attempt to avoid total deluge which affects the smaller birds quicker at risk of hypothermia.

Feathers are fairly waterproof but caution is shown to keep water off using feather to keep dry and warm.

Next time it rain storms appear watch the smaller birds seek refuge to avoid trails and tribulation against predators when water logged unable to fly with ease. Check for nests where young chicks may have fallen out with little to no protection if parents where caught away from nest.

For all the beautiful birds in nature, not all are designed for the extreme wet conditions, take time to watch out for them! Yours in bird watching, some photographs may have been used previously most are fresh from recent rains.

He/she looks similar to my female Harris's hawk after bathing. You nicely catched the moment. Nice photo.

Happy New Year.

Have a nice day. All the best. Greetings and much love from Hungary.

I felt so sorry for the poor guy, he found a frog head he dropped in flight, then settled in the tree exhausted.

Happy 2022 to to you and your family in Hungary and look forward to seeing your content.

Well, mine is not exhausted. Mine is calm and happy. I upload photos about her from time to time, usually in the Feathered Friends community.

Happy New Year.

Have a nice day. All the best. Greetings and much love from Hungary.

Kites will swarm here hopefully again soon when flying ants emerge from the ground, we also see them regularly at the beach or just cruising around the skies.

Never seen one so tired in wet weather.

You have a good opportunity to shoot a number of pictures of birds, I have never done this work before, I really like your post. 👌

Always enjoy watching bird life, some so quick to fly away, always a lucky day when they sit long enough. Thanks for visiting and kind comment, always a good time to start and see where the passion takes you.

!LUV

You have sharp shooting speed, they are wild stars, thank You! 🍻

Little patience and a lot of luck, always good fun!

Hello dear friend @joanstewart good day
Birds are admirable, everything they have to go through to survive the rainy seasons.
I love the variety of birds that you have in your town; The photographs you show us are really beautiful. Excellent shots. Congratulations
I take this opportunity to wish you a happy and prosperous year 2022

Hello always lovely to see you and if I haven't wished hope 2022 is treating you well.

Birds are lovely to watch, often find little ones after storms needing a little help.

Thanks for visiting and lovely kind comment as always @jlufer

That first one sure looks' like the weather is wearing him down

this morning i saw more ducks at the beach than I ever have it was literally so noisy with so many of them
you sure have such a wide variety of beautiful birds there

Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :), I truly enjoy exploring the world virtually each Wednesday seeing walks from all around the globe and feeling I am there and experiencing it all myself, such as I did in your post just now :)

He was tired after hours of heavy rain, one doesn't always think of birds that normally don't prepare or unable to change their ability with water.

Birds keep me interested in what has happening outdoors every day.

Thanks for visiting, look forward to 2022 Wednesday walks.

I am planning to try and get more bird photos this year the new camera I have preordered even had bird eye focus looking forward to trying that out

That sounds super exciting I remember your capture of the bird on the bridge in NYC some time ago, yes bird watching to photograph is super addictive.

Ohh yeah I know the one you mean

Fingers crossed I have some luck this spring

Wooded areas you go walking should most definitely have plenty of bird life, hopefully you get to photograph many.

I guess time will tell

So many colorful luttle guys.

I think I said it before, but I like the violet one best.

Some only appear briefly, more often than not after the rains. Violet starling is only the second time I have ever seen in my life.

Amazing photography @joanstewart!

I don't have an amazing camera but we live very close to Flamingo Vlei wetlands which is a birdwatching haven of a sort.

I can remember even going there on a school outing. My project was of the Grey Heron.

Perhaps I should go and see if I can grab some good shots.

Wetlands will offer some amazing seasonal birds, yes grab any camera and get out it is fun for all so long as you are quiet.

You founds a nice selection of birds… 😊 beautiful.
Poor them, getting so drenched.

Having a lot more rain birds have to adapt, leaving the garden to go slightly wild they have many thick bushes to hide in. Cape Sparrow will sit under the house roof, they are very clever.

That’s indeed clever of them 😎
Climate is changing everywhere. We have birds here that normally would go to Africa, but in recent years they don’t even cross the water anymore to go to Africa. Some stay around the lagoons.

Seeing birds arrive from North Africa that normally don't come South, normally travel to Europe, weather definitely changing much.

Yes it sure is.

Wow. Capturing pics in rain and storm is so difficult yet you captured so many. Well done. Great captures.

Normally after rain they birds re-appear in great numbers, see them battling when caught unaware, thanks for visit.

Nice post, beautiful photos as always - this is what I wanted to write, but then I saw the Violet-backed Starling. What a beauty this is. The white in front and these shiny violet feathers on the back looks awesome. I don't think I have seen such a bird before, even not in one of Zac's posts.

Second time I have seen them in my lifetime, very excited to see this one although for some reason thought they were bigger.

Sub-Saharan Africa bird enjoys bush or edges of bushlands normally in canopy of trees, another lucky sighting after rains ceased the other day.

Have a wonderful day, we are expecting more rain again after a blistering hot day yesterday.

We have also birds which I have seen only once or twice in my life, but I don't think anyone is as near as nice as this one 😀 Most of our birds are not that colourful anyway.

It has snowed, but not very much. I'm wishing you a great Thursday 🌞

Thanks a lot, Joan, I'm happy that it snowed and I'm happy that you like the photo 😃 although I was hoping for more of that white stuff. Tomorrow I want to drive into the other direction where they have got much more.

WOW That Violet-backed Starling is amazing 😍

Cute little bird, lucky sighting to say the least.

That kite lookes so knackered, fantastc shot!
I have never seen wet raptor before.

Love them all birds, marvelous photos!

This was one from a few years ago, I have never seen a kite so disorientated by rain either African Yellow-billed Kite on the old platform transferred here.

Thanks for visiting and have a wonderful day.

Now that you have brough it to our attention...
Poor birds... while I am comfortably warm inside the house, many of them are not!
Next time it is raining, I'll be in the lookout for birds...
but alas, I don't see them too often!

Birds are everywhere, except when it rains they tend to find the best shelter available.

Hope you get to see some live birds, not only on coins 😌have an awesome day!

You know me too well!
The only two time I posted here was with my coins.

Now the Kookaburra you will have to learn the song, so every time you see the bird you will relate to this one....

'Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree', a song we sang around campfires and if you need more information speak to an Aussie like @galenkp I'm South African.... 😂

Lovely photos of your colorful birds. Great shot of the yellow billed kite soaking wet, Joan.

Usually gliding above, was surprising to realize how much they do battle when rains continue to fall for long periods. Have a great day Jo.

Thanks for visiting and kind comment @temple234

It is sad to know that they can't forage under storms, being so small they can face a storm thanks to their plumage.

The small birds normally have good shelter to hide in.

Birds from another World unknown to me. From the other hemisphere of the Earth!

Always interesting learning about nature over the seas in lands far away, so good morning to you @alechi and thanks for visiting.

4557-Hello.JPG

Sunshine greetings from South Africa.....

Some birds have it easier than other birds I can see. I know that the osprey on my beach finds it a bit tough to find his prey food. Feast or famine is suppose to be good for humans I hear!

Talking about osprey I believe we have one currently frequenting the river to sea in the valley here, think I spotted him the other day, yet to capture him up close and personal.

Oh fasting is working well for my son only eating between 2pm and 10pm, it shows what a little less can go a long way.
