This week the Show Me A Photo Contest is all about birds and food. Many thanks to @nelinoeva and the Feathered Friends team for running this awesome contest!

What do hummingbirds eat?

I photographed this female Anna's Hummingbird I today. Hummingbirds consume food all day long, taking in up to half their body weight in nectar and bugs. Apparently, they will visit between 1,000 and 2,000 flowers per day!

The birds in this post are all feasting on the nectar of Grevillea juniperina flowers, commonly known as a prickly-spider-flowers. Hummingbirds just love these flowers and there were a dozen or more of them buzzing all around me. If you want hummingbirds in your yard you should absolutely plant some Grevillea juniperina bushes!

Today I was able to get within six feet of the birds and I stood there for a half-hour taking shot after shot. My zoom lens will focus as close as six feet and I noticed several times the birds got too close for me to capture.

Hummingbirds are so quick it's normally difficult to keep up with them but today they gave me plenty of chances.

Above: here's a shot of a male which can be identified by its bright red throat.

I'm not sure, but this next one may be an immature male. Notice the tiny red or purple spot on its throat. If you're a hummingbird expert, please let me know if I'm correct.

Here's one more shot of a hummingbird drinking nectar.

I had a lot of fun photographing these hummingbirds. I sure hope you enjoyed the photos!

Drop-dead gorgeous! I am always amazed at how many great shots you capture. I find them almost impossible to get more than a piece of them.

Great shots and I need to visit more often!

Thank you so much, Denise! The hummingbirds are tricky to photograph but there were so many of them which made it much easier. :-)

I never get that many. The only time I saw a flock of them (so to speak) was in a tropical rainforest and it was like going to a fast food hamburger joint on lunch. Backed up with lines.

This was the first time for me. That bush was just full of hummingbirds!

Whatever you did, it worked!

I can rarely even get them in frame, let alone motion frozen and focused lol
Nice job.Oh... Awesome shots @keithboone !!

Thank you! There are many failed attempts as well, possibly more than the good ones. Thank goodness I'm not shooting film, I'd go broke!

Oh man I know right, I capped off over 200 flower images this morning. If I was still running 35mm film...
Yikes O.o

Yeah... what would THAT cost???

haha! I totally can imagine that!

;=)

great captures, like them a lot.

Yay! 🤗

Exceptional hummingbird photos, Keith! Simply beautiful.

Thanks a lot, Melinda! I had a good day today and got some lucky shots :-)

Incredible how many flowers per day this little bird has to visit.
Wonderful shots. Absolutely delightful to see the hummingbird feeding.

Thank you very much! Yes, I looked up that info and I was amazed!

This shot is really breathtaking...

Keep it up bro.

Thanks so much, I'm glad you liked it!

Beautiful pictures! While I am not a hummingbird expert, that little bird does look to be juvenile by the downier appearance of the feathers and how puffy he is.
I love the green pastel rainbows on that next to last shot. And the 😋 at the end.

Thanks so much! I'm convinced that is a juvenile but I wanted to hear what other people said. I posted a similar photo once and an "expert" corrected me. It's interesting how much a bird's feathers can change as it matures... the bald eagle is a very good example of this.

Ooooo now I need to look up pictures of juvenile eagles!

Here's a juvenile bald eagle for you. It was quite far away and this photo is way over-cropped but you can get the idea...
