Great Gray Owls are one of the various species that you can spot around Calgary. They do not build nests on their own and will generally use nests left behind by larger birds. They have excellent hearing and can hear potential prey moving underneath snow and inside tunnels. They will wait, listen, then swoop down to get their prey. This species is one of the few types of owls that are known to swoop and snatch prey out of the snow in this fashion.
