in Feathered Friendslast year

My wife noticed a cold visitor on the balcony in the morning. Here are a few cold birds for this #featheredfriday

This starling was eating snow and trying to warm up in the southern exposure sun. I'm sure it was hoping for a feeder to be here too but our HOA doesn't allow it because swarms of sparrows would poop up the side of the building if feeders were out.

So it had to make due with cold snow to eat. Later we saw a dove land here too but we were not fast enough to get the camera.

Instead I went out in the subzero weather to see who was out and about looking for food. The nuthatches were active.

I'm wondering if it was trying to eat tiny bits of moss on the bark?

I doubt it can find any bugs at this time of year.

This old fashioned barn always throws me for a loop from a distance. The top resembles a large hawk sitting on the top and I took a zoom shot just to see what it was... Sadly not a hawk.

Here's a young little raccoon taking drink before heading back to its den to stay warm. Or perhaps it lives in the old barn...

This poor squirrel was doing its best to warm up in the cold sun. It always seems to get colder here when the sun is out in the winter. Less cloud insulation I guess. I thought it would be a mild winter but it turns out to be pretty darn cold this year.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)

Sort:

In this cold weather every bird is trying to warm up himself because weather is harsh for them and they have to survive. I think that sparrow was thirsty that's why she was eating snow.

Yeah they have no alternative but to eat the snow. They can handle the harsh cold so long as there is food.

Nice finds. I'm surprised anything was out in the cold...even you 🙂

Getting too much cabin fever and I'm bored of going to the store lol.

I like starlings. They are terrible pests in orchards, but I still like them. So pretty with beautiful voice.

Yeah we have lots of them here I'm sure the farmers love them lol. The other day I saw them doing a murmuration out my window.

Yea... farmers all over the world love the dearly :D

Starling with snow on its bill, this is an awesome shot.
Here the starlings move somewhere else in winter and return in spring. They are amazing singers. Always confuse me with other birds calls. Several times I thought I hear an oriole and turns out to be a starling.

It was snacking on the snow while trying to warmup, probably a bit counterintuitive. I've seen videos of people who have them as pets and they can learn words. Its probably easy for them to mimic an oriole.

Amazing, isn't it? Watching that video it reminds me how often I hear them whistle. Oh, once a starling meowed. That was the weirdest tning. 😄

I can see why someone brought enough of them here as pets.
