I hear these birds around me all the time, their call is quite unique. Not like the song birds, these predatory birds have a very different call. I was lucky enough to get some pictures of one when it was near by. When I saw it I grabbed my camera and took some pictures from a far not to disturb it. Though I got closer as I took more photos of this bird. I am not sure what kind it is but figured this would be a great post for this Friday's #featheredfriends and maybe someone around the community knows what kind of bird this is.
It appears to be checking out the creek below, probably waiting for something to run by.
This bird appears kind of small for a Hawk, maybe it was a young one.
It does not seem to notice me or care while I am far away.
Glad to have it around, these birds keep my berry bushes from getting raided by song birds.
Walking over to it I got about fifteen feet away and took some more pictures.
The just moved its head, seemingly it noticed me at this point.
But it seems distracted by checking out the creek below.
I try to get a little closer, with a picture each step I take in its direction. I am able to get another couple feet closer.
Though eventually I got too close for the birds liking, and it flew up into a tree near by. Maybe it was getting uncomfortable with me approaching it.
As soon as I looked away I could not find it again, though took a picture of the general area where it flew. Maybe you can spot it?
It was great having this encounter with this bird, I think it was a young Hawk, or maybe a Chicken hawk or Kestrel which are all smaller than normal sized Hawks. It does not look like a Falcon to me, so I think its some kind of Hawk or something close to that.
hi @solominer how are you? your photo is cool, the bird looks tame, I like to see it 👍🏻😊
They there old Steem friend, life is good for me. Hope you and your Husband are doing well.
Hehe those Hawks are tough birds, not one id want to handle.
Glad you liked my post and thanks for stopping by. Its great to see your still posting many years later :-)
Nice
Looks like a Coopers Hawk. Youve been trying to attract them to your yard right? I think chicken hawk is a slang term that people use to refer to hawks in general, not a specific species. You got some great shots!
Ah cool, I was trying to get a Kestrel to move in until I learned they may not live around where I do. So now its just a large bird house..lol
I was going to build a hawk platform, but I could not find the help I needed to assemble it and put it up high in a tree. Maybe some time in the future I will try again.
Thanks alot, they did come out pretty good for the short time it stuck around.
I was just talking to someone about how much I envied people who can take photos of birds!
Hehe yeah its not easy, they dont stay around for long.
I should invest in a telescoping lens so I can better shots from a far.
I should invest in a camera, hahaha!😍
This is a coper's Hawk. He is a hunter of birds like sparrows and small birds. I see this bird on my tree. He hunts in the air and catches the birds in the air. He is look like a hawk.
Thats good, I need more hunters of these birds that eat my Blueberries.
thanks alot for the ID help and welcome to Hive!
Yep, I agree with @melinda010100 & @saboor.khan that it's a Cooper's Hawk. I've had a few visits from these guys as well, and had my photos ID'ed years back by some awesome people over at Hawk Watch International (not sure if they're still offering that free service, been a minute since I've checked). At any rate, great captures, @solominer!
Ah nice, I hear those kinds of Hawks are quite common where I live.
Thats awesome they IDed them, maybe if I get stuck on trying to figure one out I will contact them.
thanks alot!
Sighting a bird like this close to home is exciting, so glad community members identified.
Being in thicket where smaller birds dwell this hawk was obviously out looking for a good meal, landing quietly would leave swiftly, keep your eye on the bush you may be fortunate to see it again.
It sure is amazing, I am glad I live where I do where I see so many birds. Featheredfriends the community has been a great help in IDing some of the pictures I get of them.
Yeah where I live we are surrounded by trees, so I could easily see the bird chasing smaller ones through the woods.
I am sure will see them again, I see hawks on a regular basis where I live.
thanks alot for the comment.
Nice to see the bigger birds, small ones constantly stream through the garden, makes it enjoyable being outdoors.
