Birds of South Africa.

This post is as an entry into #showmeaphoto contest #80 #Smap tirelessly and gratefully run by @nelinoeva as with so many on hive. It is also to show a tiny smidgen of the natural beauty and wildlife that we are blessed with in South Africa in the skies, on land and in the sea.

The theme for this week is "show me a pic of your favourite bird". Ai Neli, that is as bad as asking me which of my older two sisters I love the most?......either way I answer I know I will be dead the next morning lol.
As I have mentioned in previous blog, I have a huge love for all animals so naturally birds fall into that spectrum although I don't regard myself as an avid "twitcher" but feel that I have a reasonable personal sighting count of species.

Okay, to whittle it down a bit I suppose my favourites lie in the raptor family. From there it is a lotto lol.

Soooo, I will be forced to pick the Steppe Buzzard based on the following even though I love so many......

Many that I love are only seen on seldom done long trips into other areas/ provinces of South Africa whereas the Steppe Buzzard is quite often seen in the surrounding areas of where I live.

The photo above is my entry into round 80 of #Showmeaphoto.

As said earlier about having to choose between my sisters @nelinoeva, dam you for making me choose between these few photos lol but once again, thanks so much for what you tirelessly do for this community and much love for it.

All the photos used were taken by myself recently while doing a building contract away from home in a small town called Darling in a farming community on the West Coast of South Africa

I know it is not easy to choose, but I am glad you made your choice. 😉😄
Wonderful shots of the buzzard. I have pics only when they are too high in the sky.

Thanks a lot and it definately makes one think 😀😅

Ah I definitely have to take and interest in birds, especially large raptors and vultures for my work - to make sure we place turbines in areas where they are less likely to lead to collisions. It has turned me into a bit of a twitcher myself!

Awesome. Did you have anything to do with the farm that was set up between Vredenburg and Britannia Bay on the West Coast a few years ago? I was living in Britannia Bay then.

No, that one is not by our company! I also know that there is another planned wind development between that wind farm and Paternoster, but that's not us either!

Ah okay. The story going around was that the farmer gets a small fortune in rental every month for them being there. Is that how it normally works?

The landowner does get compensated, usually in proportion to the revenue the turbine generates.
The first few years of projects that won the Government REIPPPP tenders (I think the Aurora Wind Farm was Round 2) were quite appealing to the landowners. Nowadays, things have got a lot more competitive, but it is still usually worth the farmers' while if the turbines are placed on land that's used for grazing rather than crops - they usually don't even have to cut back on their livestock numbers at all.

Awesome. Feel free to come put one up in my garden $😅

Hahaha - you do know how big they are right?

Very cool bird that you captured some great pics of while in flight.

You had better sleep with one eye opened for a week or so, I know how sisters can be. 😁

Thanks a lot @thebigsweed :)

Ai now you have awoken my fear and I doubt I will sleep………these two are vicious I tell ya lol.

You're a funny guy, but one never knows.

True story hahaha.

Third and last captures superb of this raptor, living in a beautiful part of the country little birds hide while big ones are in flight.

!BEER

Thanks a lot for that Joan and cheers :)
