Chestnut-breasted Malkoha: The Charm of Aceh's Lowland Forests

English NameLatine NameLocation
Chestnut-breasted MalkohaPhaenicophaeus curvirostrisAceh, Sumatra, Indonesia.

During one of my birdwatching trips in the Aceh forest, I encountered one of the rarely seen species, the Chestnut-breasted Malkoha . This bird is known for its distinctive reddish-brown chest feathers, as well as sharp eyes with a bright red ring of skin around the eyes, giving it an exotic and mysterious impression.

The Chestnut-breasted Malkoha lives in lowland and hillside forest habitats. When I saw it, it seemed very careful, jumping from one branch to another, as if hiding itself behind the thick branches and leaves of the pine trees. This bird is indeed known as a shy species and often active in the canopy or middle of the forest, making it difficult to see for casual birdwatchers.

The existence of this species indicates that the forest still has a fairly intact ecosystem to support various types of fauna. Where this species eats insects, small lizards, and forest fruits, it has an important role in maintaining balance

The encounter with the Chestnut-breasted Malkoha reminds us that every species has an important role in its ecosystem. Sustainable forests will continue to be home to biodiversity, including species we may not always be aware of.
