White-faced Plover on the West Coast of Aceh: A Rare Record from Birdwatchers

The presence of the White-faced Plover on the west coast of Aceh is a rare occurrence. As one of the shorebird species that is quite difficult to find, this encounter provides interesting insights into its migration and habitat in the coastal areas of Sumatra, especially in Aceh.

The White-faced Plover is known as a species that has a limited range and a relatively small population, so recording its presence is very important for birdwatchers. Although the White-faced Plover was previously more common in other coastal areas of Southeast Asia, especially in coastal areas of China, Vietnam, and Thailand, the presence of this bird on the coast of Aceh indicates a potentially broader migration pattern than previously understood.

When I observed birds along the coastline, the White-faced Plover appeared among other shorebirds in a small group, such as Plover and Sand-plover. Its distinctive appearance with a striking white face makes it quite easy to recognize, despite its relatively small size. This bird was seen foraging around the water's edge and occasionally running quickly on the sand, following the movement of the receding waves.

The presence of the White-faced Plover on the west coast of Aceh, suggests that the coast in this region could be an important area for this rare species. Aceh's coastal habitat with sandy stretches and small rivers flowing into the sea may provide suitable areas for resting and foraging for this shorebird during its journey.
