「 AI and Word Processing Software 」

| Tech Thursday Series |

WPS is a word processing software from Zhuhai and various companies in China under Kingsoft. This has similar features to Microsoft Word except it is free to download and to use.

For those who can’t afford Microsoft subscription, WPS Office offers alternatives as it’s seamless and looks like Microsoft except it has a lot more features. If you care only about practical use of a software, this works really well. However if you care about morality and privacy, there are better options. Though there are plenty of open source word processing such as Libre and Open Office, WPS is still higher than them because they already have major fonts that you need without having to install them individually. For non-tech savvy, WPS would be the best choice. It’s only downloaded and installed in a few clicks.

One major difference lately is that WPS integrates AI into the software. The AI is called WPS AI. It is built based on LLaMA instead of ChatGPT which was developed by Open AI. The Ai that WPS uses is developed by their own team as the website mention. Anyhow, LLaMA is the same that Meta uses and they have now already developed the latest version of it for anyone to use. The article linked on the next one also includes the simplistic technical report on how WPS AI was built.“AI isn’t replacing writers, it’s helping them write”.

While it is true that AI could help us start an idea, as you can see below, it comes with various instant ways to write a blog post and even creative stories.

However, I personally beg to differ. Not to mention, having a writer’s block is a journey itself and writers need rest too. Writer’s block can be a positive experience as it’s allowing us to rest and reflect on our writing. But having such tools and how I have heard is now being allowed in academia can be a double-edged sword.

But how good is WPS AI vs Chatgpt 3.5 when compared side to side? Are they capable of deceiving us when we’re not using GPTZero to detect them?

As you can see below, here is the comparison when it was asked to write a creative story about an apple. Click the picture to enlarge it.

Chat GPT 3.5 Model

ChatGPT 3.5 models integrate conversation that makes the story less boring. Unlike WPS AI which creates a much more simplistic story as if it was written by a 5th grader. The word count is also very limited unlike ChatGPT 3.5 model. The word that ChatGPT 3.5 model uses is a lot more complex as well. So, it certainly fits more criteria of being a decent creative story.

Another example when it comes to blog posts, ChatGPT 3.5 is a lot more argumentative and lays out a proper blog style compared to LLaMA style or the model that WPS Ai uses. However, when it comes to blog style, you can certainly pass the WPS AI model except with a few minor tweaks. The ChatGPT one appears quite too academic and isn't really fitting for a blog either except it has a good content. The tweak from Chatgpt would lies on its format and placement of the words.

Can they bypass the detection using ChatGPT Zero?

When both were compared, the result intrigued me because although LLamA's creative writing style has a higher chance of being detected as AI written, the blog that was generated from WPS AI was not. So, WPS AI when it comes to blog provides a mix of human and Ai while ChatGPT 3.5 has a moderate likelihood of being detected as AI written. With minor tweaks especially from the WPS Ai model, I am sure that it has high chance to bypass ChatGPT Zero.

Those comparisons are only a small fraction of both AI capabilities. However, both language model has its pros and cons. WPS AI was meant to assist writing and it is its sole purpose. That is unlike ChatGPT 3.5 that has a lot more features and assists many tasks. When it comes to pricing, WPS AI offers competitive price compared to the access to latest ChatGPT. One thing for sure is that, given how it has entered even word processing software, AI is here to stay and coupled with the fact that academia is starting to embrace it as well. And that is my finding today. See you in my next tech content!

Sort:

Excellent comparison of these AI systems. I personally don't like to use AI for writing unless it's to check facts, but I can see how these tools are immensely useful to refine and speed up writing, so I might integrate them more into my workflow.

The one AI app that I'm having fun with is called Reflectr AI Journal and Notebook (Android). This is hands down the most useful app for journaling I've ever come across. Basically, you journal throughout your day, and the AI analyses the content of your words and spits out advise and jokes that are surprisingly funny, useful, and accurate. You can also use it for to-do lists and note taking, but I use other non-AI systems for that.

They definitely speed up writing process but I am uncomfortable of using them. I only use AI for helping me with scheduling. It's so much fun. Have you tried Bing AI? it looks like SIRI but I am not sure which model it's based on. I'll check on the AI that you recommended, it sounds good!

I have tried Bing sporadically, and I liked how it adds citations to responses, which is useful for technical or scientific work. Reflectr is very funny and actually useful. Usually, I feel like journaling is speaking into a void, but this app gives feedback right away and then a summary at the end of the week.

We cannot avoid the advance of technology and artificial intelligences, it is better to adhere to them and use them in our favor for certain things, although it is true that if we look at it from that point of view, it can limit the creative vision of writers. I didn't know WPS, I will surely take a look at it later because it caught my attention.

Thanks for sharing your content here Mac, greetings!

WPS is just basically same as Microsoft Office. It's interesting stuff especially if you write a lot but other than that, I wouldn't really recommend since its feature is way limited than ChatGPT 3.5.

 last year

Hey, i didn't know that WPS had an AI 🤯🤯🤯
Thanks for sharing 😎

Check it out, it's pretty cool!

That's a good comparison, sometimes to get the best out of Text based AI's such as these, you need to add conditions so it gives a more compelling writing.

Both are okay though, since people wrote ZeroGpt and Chatgpt, I'm sure they are improving it by the minute.

Its been like forever since i came around 0_0 had to deal with a few stuff.

They're definitely improving by day. but there's no way we can escape AI.
