The United Nations (UN) has released a report detailing the horrific treatment of Ukrainian prisoners of war by Russian forces. The report, prepared by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), reveals a shocking level of violence and torture inflicted on Ukrainian captives.

According to the report, Russian soldiers subjected prisoners to electric shocks, beatings, rape, suffocation, and sleep deprivation. Cases of genital mutilation, forced physical exertion, and mock executions were also documented. State officials were involved in the torture processes.

One Ukrainian POW shared his harrowing experience: “The violence was constant. Every time I left the cell, went outside, to the shower, or during inspection, I had to stand with my legs widely apart. I was beaten and shocked with electric prods. They kicked me in the groin. They said they did it so I couldn’t have children.”

The report also notes that Russian officials frequently called for harsh treatment and the execution of Ukrainian military personnel.
