The Impact of Parental Screen Time on Child Development #1

What we are doing to children and what will happen to future generations?

Did you knew?
In the rapidly changing digital environment of today, parents often use their smartphones, tablets, and other electronic devices for entertainment, communication, and even relaxation. However, recent studies have suggested that excessive screen time by parents has significantly affected children's behavior and development.

The Consequences of Parental Distraction
One new study published in Pediatric Research really brings home the point of just how parents' distraction with technology can disrupt an essential bond between parents and children. The researchers followed 183 pairs of parents and children over six months, charting parents' screen time and child behavior. The findings were disturbing: even minor daily interruptions at the hands of technology decreased parent-child interaction quality while increasing frustration, hyperactivity, and emotional outbursts among children under five years old.
Many parents find in electronic devices a hiding place from the tiring needs of their children, even when they pray for their attention. The study states that direct contact and communication with the child should be at the center. On average, studies have shown that American adults spend nine hours per day on digital devices and are inhibiting better interaction with their children. The comfort of digital distractions for parents may lead to situations where they miss valuable face-to-face opportunities with their child crucial for the emotional and cognitive development of the child.

Finding a Healthy Balance
The experts suggest coming up with rules in daily routine where "no screens" is allowed, either during meals, when talking face-to-face to children, and when engaging children in outdoor plays, storytelling, and other activity games instead of entertaining them using digital media. Pediatricians likewise emphasize that through real-life, interactive experiences-not passive screen exposure-children will learn best.
Technology in life is unstoppable, but mindful usage can keep it at bay and not interfere with very important developments in childhood. It is possible for parents to provide a balance between digital and real-world experiences and create an emotionally enriching atmosphere for their child to grow into.
