-Oh Klahoma, Jack Stauber
Hello, Hivers! Have you ever heard of or encountered the recent “Ghost Challenge” on your social media platforms? It went viral during the Halloween and the whole month of October for a good reason! The challenge involves making a fun reel by wearing a piece of cloth (preferably white) and paired with a striking pair of sunglasses to cosplay as adorable little ghosts. Whether you do it solo or with a group of friends, the result is always entertaining and creative.
Well, as someone who loves trying quirky trends, I couldn’t resist the urge to jump onto the bandwagon train! The Ghost Challenge seemed like the perfect way to unwind, and I knew my friends would enjoy it as much as I would. To convince them, I sent a few trending reels in our group chat a day before. My excitement must have been contagious because, thankfully, they agreed to join my shenanigans—hahaha!
Since we had no scheduled classes or exams for the entire afternoon—it might have been because of midterm week—we decided it was the perfect time to pull this off. Instead of heading to a park, just like what’s in the lyrics, we chose to do the challenge right on our campus. Why not? It felt like a fun and rebellious way to turn an ordinary space into something extraordinary.
With our sheets and sunglasses in hand, we met up and got to work. The excitement was palpable as we brainstormed and scouted for the best spots to create the spooky-yet-quirky ghost aesthetic. From the old jeeps parked under the mahogany trees behind the canteen to the iconic stairs in our campus’ centrum (building), we had fun finding spots that became our personal photoshoot location. We didn’t even mind the fact that other students were around, casually hanging out or walking by.
Draping the sheets over ourselves turned out to be more of an adventure than we anticipated. One of my friends kept tripping over the hem of their sheet, stumbling like a clumsy ghost, while another couldn’t stop fussing with her sunglasses to make sure they looked “just right.” It didn’t help that the sheets were thick enough to obscure our vision, and the dark sunglasses made it worse. Timing our poses was a hilarious challenge. We’d strike a dramatic stance only to realize the camera wasn’t ready yet—or that someone’s “ghost” was facing the wrong direction entirely!
Here's @milesinverse struggling to drape her cloth hahaha
Of course, being on campus meant we weren’t alone. Most of the students passing by gave us curious glances, and some even stopped to watch for a bit. It was funny to see the mix of reactions—some looked puzzled, others amused, and a few even gave us a knowing look as they recognize the trend we were attempting to recreate.
Despite the occasional mishap, the experience was everything we hoped it would be and more. With our shared laughter and the clumsy poses, it felt like we’d stepped into our little world. The photos and videos we took were the right ingredients for downright chaotic moments. Some shots turned out unexpectedly good, even though we were messing with them, while others were hilariously bad—but that was as expected, and it was part of the charm.
Editing the reel afterward was almost as fun as shooting it, especially when we added the melancholy tune of “Oh Klahoma,” the unofficial anthem of the trend. After all, what’s a ghost photoshoot without a little indie drama in the background? Hahaha. The reel turned out even better than we imagined. We somehow nailed the aesthetic; it was a perfect mix of chaos and creativity. By the end of the day, we somehow forgot all the tension from the midterms as it already melted away. We then did a group photo with more of our classmates to end the day.
Looking back, that ghostly adventure was one of the highlights of October for me. It wasn’t just about following a trend—it was about pausing for a moment, letting go of stress, and embracing the silliness with friends. College life can be overwhelming, with deadlines and responsibilities constantly looming over us, but little moments like this remind me why it’s important to take a break and create memories that will last far longer than any trend.
What do you think, Hivers? Have you ever used a silly trend to take a break and make memories with your friends? If not, maybe it’s time to let your quirkiness out and have fun! Sure, some would say cringe, but who says you can’t do it anyway? Life’s too short not to have a little fun now and then, so why not create your twist on a trend and make new memories that will last in the fleeting moment that is youth?
After all, it’s moments like these that make life a little brighter. Here’s to random shenanigans and unforgettable adventures with the people who make your world a little more fun.
Cheers to the memories, my ghostly friends! 👻✨
