A Day of Faith and Family: My First Fluvial Procession

My first fluvial procession for Santo Niño de Cebu

It's been multiple times that I have been asked to come to the Fluvial procession for Santo Niño in Cebu, and I kept turning down the invites from my family. Honestly, I didn't know what it was all about. It's kind of ridiculous that as a Catholic, I didn't know its significance because I let myself not learn about it.

In January 2025, my family asked me to come again, and since my mother was available, she said she would come and bring me along. Who am I to say no to my mother? So I said yes.

When we left for Cebu, the traffic was really bad, but I felt thankful we had our own van for transportation.

When we arrived, the Fluvial procession was almost starting. Because the parking station was too far from where the procession began, we couldn't take a rest even for a minute. By the time we got there, the procession had already started, so we joined the crowd and began walking with many people. It was so tiring! I never thought it would take hours; we walked nonstop for five hours until it was done.

DURING FLUVIAL PROCESSION

I couldn't feel my legs anymore! If they could talk, they would have begged me to stop walking. It was funny when my Tita exchanged her sandals for her son's rubber shoes in the middle of the procession because her feet were hurting after hours of walking. On the other hand, I found it inspiring that my little cousin never asked for a rest. Even though he usually fusses around—especially in such a big crowd—he just kept walking without complaining despite the heat and tiredness.

I learned from my mother what it means to be part of the Fluvial procession for Santo Niño. This event is not just a celebration; it's a deep expression of faith and devotion among Cebuanos and Filipinos alike.

The Santo Niño de Cebu is a beloved image of the Child Jesus and is considered the oldest Christian artifact in the Philippines. It was given by Ferdinand Magellan to Rajah Humabon and Hara Humamay during their baptism in 1521. The image symbolizes faith and has become an important part of Filipino culture.

During the procession, Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma blessed the miraculous image of the Holy Child as thousands of devotees waited outside the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño on Osmeña Boulevard. This basilica is not just a church; it's a historical site where many believe miracles happen. The original Santo Niño image is housed there, encased behind bulletproof glass to protect it.

My favorite moment during the Fluvial Procession was when I spotted a little Santo Niño in a baby stroller. It was so adorable that I just had to take a picture of it!

AFTER FLUVIAL PROCESSION

After the Fluvial Procession, my family and I headed to the Foscon building where my Tita works to take a break and use the bathroom. We were so tired from walking for five hours that we ended up sitting on the floor of the building. Our feet were really sore!

After feeling better, we headed to the Plaza to eat with my family. When we exited the Foscon Building, a stunning sunset greeted us, painting the sky in soft pinks, purples, and oranges. It was beautiful and felt like a reward for all the walking we had done. I couldn't help but gaze at it for a long time before entering the park. We then bought barbecue and enjoyed our meal while waiting for the famous fireworks that follow the Mass.

The fireworks were truly spectacular and made my day! They were so beautiful that they helped me forget all about how tired my legs were.
