A New Naming Scheme: Goodbye RX 8000, Hello RX 90
One of the first surprises surrounding the RDNA 4 GPUs is the naming scheme. Historically, AMD has adhered to a numbering system in the thousands for its Radeon series – such as RX 5000, RX 6000, and RX 7000. It was widely expected that the next generation would follow this trend and be named the Radeon RX 8000 series. However, leaks have revealed that AMD is skipping the 8000 series entirely.
According to the rumors, AMD’s next-generation GPUs will be branded the Radeon RX 90 series, bypassing the expected 8000 name and deviating from their long-standing convention of numbering in the thousands. The first known GPU in this lineup is the Radeon RX 9070 XT, signaling a fresh approach to AMD's GPU strategy.
