The Jesus culture

A beautiful story is told in the book of John 4; Jesus talking to a woman A what? A woman!

That was not the culture. To prove that it wasn't popular, John records the reaction of Jesus' disciples when they find him having an intimate conversation with who? A woman?

Just then His disciples came, and they were surprised to find Him talking with a woman. However, no one said, “What are You asking about?” or, “Why are You talking to her?”
John 4:27 AMP

You see Jesus was known to not be defined by culture. He healed on the Sabbath day, even when they said, "it is our culture not to do that on the Sabbath"

Jesus be like, "I don't run by culture. I define it"

Yet, He was a team player. He said, "give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar"

But being a team player is not the same thing as compromising. Jesus NEVER compromised. Not for anyone, and certainly not for the culture

I don't know about you, but I don't want to be defined by my culture. So many of us are holding on to ungodly practices because, it's culture.

We are ready to do anything, as long as that's what the culture says. But we are in the Jesus culture. We are defined by the culture of Christ.

So it is an error to hear a Christian say, "I'm gonna do this thing (howbeit wrong) because in my culture...

"Ah in my place,women don't....."
"Ah if you don't do this during your wedding in my place ehn.." "Over my dead body. It has never been heard of in the time of my fathers. In my family, we don't"

Well, our culture shapes us but Christ defines us
Our culture tells where we are from but Christ tells us where we are going. Our culture identifies us but Christ gives us our identity.

So anything in your culture that doesn't look like Christ is not something you should hold on to. You need to search your heart. So many seeds that are not right have been sowed in our hearts by culture.

Unlearn saints, unlearn....

When you are tempted to react based on your cultural beliefs, ask yourself, does this look like Jesus? Would Jesus do this? Is this part of the culture of Christ? ...because ultimately, we don't belong here.... we don't.

Happy Sunday people of God
