ORIGIN OF SLAVERY AND SLAVE TRADE
It has become fashionable, especially among people of non African decent, to associate slavery and slave trade with African because of the Atlantic slave-trade in the 15th century (onwubiko 1973). This is of course the result of a gross historical ignorance.
It has been stated in the Bible, about the Jews being enslaved by the Egyptians. The great pyramids of Egypt were built by slave labour.
FACTORS WHICH PROMOTED THE GROWTH OF SLAVE TRADE
Myriads of factors contributed to the growth of slave trade. The major factor was that the discovery of America by the Europeans exposed the need of labourers to work in the plantation farm. Africa seemed to be the only place where such labourers could be found. Another factor was that slave trade was highly a lucrative business.
SOLUTION
All said and nothing done, exacerbates problems and not solving them. Government and other law-enforcement agencies should intensify their efforts to bring the culprits to book. Parents, as well as other voluntary organizations, should be advised to help in the search of the hideouts of the kidnappers and give valid information that may lead to the arrest of the offenders.
