Daniel was a righteous man of princely lineage who lived between 620-538B. He was carried to Babylon in 605B.C by King Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel was about 17years old when he came to Babylon as a captive. The meaning of Daniel is GOD OS MY JUDGE OR JUDGEMENT OF GOD. He was born in Judah. Daniel is equally called BELTESGHAZZAR. The two name are used interchangeably. While in Babylonian captivity, Daniel mentored other three Hebrews shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, the men who destroyed the kingdom of darkness in the strange land.
Daniel's lifestyle in Babylon
There are countless and moral lifestyle one can emulate from the life of Daniel. But for this, 5 lessons will be highlighted.
Daniel was resolute and reasonable with his faith
When kings food was presented, Daniel and other three Hebrews he had mentored maintained their stand with Yahweh God. The kings food is to nourish them in knowledge and understanding things that are miseries. However, the food(kings food) according to some bible scholars, was dedicated to the idols before presenting to those young men the king set_apart for this exercise. Based on this Daniel and other three Hebrew men stood reverently not to eat such food knowing fully that would go against the Torah - the book of law (Dan 1;11 vs 13)
2. Prayed with friends (even when death decree was made)
Daniel prayed atimes alone and sometimes with his other three faithful brothers (shadrach, Meshach and Abednego). His prayer pattern gave him the key to all secret things in the kingdom of Babylon. Not only have that, at the Lion den, his ever answering prayer silenced the mouth of the lions before he got to the den. Through prayer also, the meaning of Kings dream was revealed (Dan 2 vs 1)
3. Be humble, thankful and full of praise:
Daniel and others praised the God of their fathers of the revelation. The never ascribed any glory to themselves as the owner of the knowledge or wisdom ( Dan 2 vs 19_23)
4. Take no credit for the lords works:
Daniel would have very easily told the King that he was given a vison by God because he was special and smarter man in the world. He could have said that he was holy and blessed that is why God gave him the vision. He would have taken credit in any way that he chose. Instead, he chose not to take credit at all Dan 2 vs 21
5. Have courage to tell the hard truths:
On different occasions, Daniel and the three Hebrews delivered harsh and hard messages to the king. The stood their ground not to worship the golden image presented by King Nebuchadnezzar. They spoke boldly by mentioning the kings name for emphasis that come what may, they will not worship man made Hod and they were victorious at last Dan 3:16
Rewards and moral lessons for the Christians
- Daniel and other three Hebrews were promoted in the strange land
- They made exploits
- Their names and deeds were written in the book of life
In conclusion
Our lifestyle is the Holy Bible that men of the world are reading. Let's us watch our spiritual life and moral ways as well. If Daniel and other three Hebrews could survive in the land of Babylon, ours is no exception. As Christians against injustices that go against our faith.
