SIN IS NOT WORTH IT

The objective of sin is rooted in the craving for all manner of acquisitions. The grip of sin lies in what it advances as its benefits. These awful benefits can be summed up as “Bread of deceit” which “is sweet to a man; but afterwards his mouth shall be filled with gravel” (Proverbs 20:17). There is something about every enticement to sin; there is something it offers you. No matter what the offering is, you’ll come to discover that it’s simply not worth it.

When the devil came to the garden of Eden to tempt Eve to make her sin against God; he came with an “offering”. The devil had this to say to Eve concerning the forbidden fruit – “For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil” (Genesis 3:5). “And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat” (Genesis 3:6).

Eve craved seriously for the “wisdom” sin had to offer. She sought for her eyes to be opened beyond the allowance God has earmarked for their eyes. Their eyes got opened quite alright, but what they saw was their nakedness and it gave them an occupation of fending for themselves: “And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked, and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons” Genesis 3:7.

Face to face with the offering of sin, they simply discovered that it wasn’t worth it. There was nothing from the onset about their clothing in life which was their concern. God who was their “Tailor” had clothed them with His glory. When sin came, the glory was removed and they became their own tailors. Sin strips men of divine glory.

As it was then, so it is now. The craving to acquire one thing or the other at the expense of God’s Word has always been the conscious or unconscious objective of a life of sinfulness. The Bible warns – “What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? (Mark 8:36-37).

No matter what you seek to acquire; always know that “we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out” (1 Timothy 6:7). So, where do you stand with all those acquisitions and pleasures gotten at the expense of God’s Word.
