This summer I have had the resolve to try my hand at the simpler home tasks that exist around our house. I'm not a handy-person by any stretch of the imagination, but my tradie in-laws tell me that things always look more complicated than they seem and the only way to learn it is to just do the things... plus, nothing will screw up in a big way if I'm only doing the simple stuff!
Well... I'm not completely sure about that... I'm pretty sure that I could do something quite disastrous whilst attempting to do something simple... but in the end, it probably isn't going to bring the house down and the damage is likely to be repairable... even if it might be a touch expensive!
Anyway, the task on this particular day was to replace the gas tube that stops the flyscreen security door from slamming shut. And of course, I went to the hardware store without bringing the old gas tube... and that meant that I bought a slightly larger version than the one that I was replacing... hopefully, that wasn't going to be a problem!
So, these were the old fittings... it looked like it might be possible to immediately swap out the old tube for the new one.
But it was quickly obvious that the two mechanisms for connecting the tube to the bracket were different enough that I would have to swap in the new bracket... no problem, unscrewing and screwing are well within my limited skill set!
As I quickly found out... the longer new tube was not going to fit in the space that the old brackets had outlined. Sigh... and that meant that I was going to have to remove the old brackets and add in the new ones.... but it also meant that I would need to drill new holes in the metal security door.
Eeeeep! I was really trying to avoid drilling holes... but I have the tools for it, a decent deWalt screwdriver/drill that I brought back from Europe. And I also have a Makita hammer drill... but I don't think that this job calls for that amount of firepower! But there is a wall attachment job that will need holes in brick that might need that... but first to build up the courage...
So, the drill holes were surprisingly easy to do with the metal drill bit, and I've gotten better at choosing the right sizes!
While I was doing this, I figured that I may as well attached the other bracket as well... And luckily for me, the screw hole pattern was exactly the same in the new and old brackets... I always feel a bit weird using the same holes, I always feel like they won't be quite as secure. But the seemed quite fine this time... will this be the disaster, when a guest pulls on the door and gets hit by the falling security door?
And here we go... the new tube fits just fine now! Woohoo... just a bit of tweaking the the pressure release screw, and the door now closes without slamming hard! Yay!
... and while I was there, I even replaced the doorknob on this door! My wife was there trying to figure it out for ages... but with my new-found handyman confidence, I had a bit of a look and figured out how it worked, and then attached it without any drama!
