Capturing motion in the dark

in Lightpainters United5 years ago (edited)

I sometimes get obsessive over capturing motion in images and not just capturing a still boring subject where nothing is happening. I aim to make a flat two dimensional image in to something more like it's alive. Or at least that's what I'm aiming for...

This is the lovely Chayla East (aka @thetattooedprincess on IG) shot with a continuous and strobe light with a camera rotation device:

This is SamFire doing his thing: (Using 2nd curtain rear sync to freeze SamFire but getting the motion of the spin is not easy!)

This is an artist's mannequin with a camera rotation device: (Here I've used a Roundflash softbox set to 1/64th power for the blur and 1/4 power for the more prominent figure on the right).

And finally, this is some experimental shizz I tried with @fadetoblack where I fired a flash to freeze the subject and then pan at an angle with a continuous light source to capture the motion. Turns out it wasn't very popular on "regular" social media but who cares, it was an underappreciated experiment!

All of the above images were shot in one photographic exposure and are not Photoshop creations.

About me:
I usually specialise in shooting lightpainting images but occasionally dabble in urbex and artistic model photography. I'm always on the lookout for someone to collaborate with; please don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like to create art.

Cheers Brian, definitely want to do this again in a studio environment eventually, just don't seem to have had the same opportunities since the studio closed...
