Rotating people in a photograph

in Lightpainters United3 years ago

Following from my last post where I talked about camera rotation photography and trying to be innovative and standing out from the crowd, this post is about rotating people!

My last post: http://peakd.com/hive-108913/@fastchrisuk/plughole-dimension-jumper-discovering-alternative-uses-for-rotating-the-camera

Camera rotation photography is a sub genre of lightpainting where the subject is rotated on the camera's lens axis leading to some very weird effects. I appear to have shot quite a few images where people are the subject:

Hanging around in caves in the dark

My old mate, Suz and I ventured to the lime kiln in the Peak District to find it had been flooded after heavy rain. There was a little island of mud just big enough for Suz to stand on while I set up the lights.

This shot is fairly simple to do. Place a yellow gelled strobe at the rear of the frame with a laser pen taped on top. I threw in a couple of smoke pellets to make the lasers more prominent in the image. The trick with these shots is not use too much power on the flashguns so as not to overpower the lasers.

Shot in one exposure with a camera rotation tool, the textures on the stone were amazing!

Five Go Mad in Padley

An image from a favourite lightpainting location with Tom Hill, lightpainting waver extraordinairre. Here I've shot Tom in the middle of the frame so he can spin a lightpainted circle, then without ending the exposure, I panned the camera across the frame to set Tom off centre. Then it's an easy task to rotate the subject another four ways, all in one exposure.

An afernoon with Scarlett

I don't believe I've seen anyone trying to replicate this technique. Probably because it's too weird!

For this shot, I framed Scarlett off centre and worked out the correct exposure. For the rotations, I used a decreasingly lower power on the studio strobe as I rotated around the lens axis.

Note to self: do this again!

Straight outta the Kiln

This is still one of my fave all time lightpainting images. Shot with @fadetoblack who is stood in the frame, I shot lightblades in the centre of frame then panned across to shoot Tim's silhouette and his infamous furry parka. (We miss that parka!)

Rotating the Snake

@fadetoblack found this location on the Snake Pass in Derbyshire and it would have been rude not to try a little camera rotation. Shot in one photographic exposure as per usual, I liked the unusual colour combination and the sense of scale in this one.

Equilateral Evolution

This was a three way camera rotation using a fisheye lens in Padley Gorge with it's gnarly secille oak trees. We used three different gel colours on this one with @fadetoblack running to the rear of the frame to change the gel colour between each section. This was shot back in the day where we were using my old LED Lenser X21r2 monster flashlight which has since been replaced with remote triggering strobes!

Another image shot in one photographic exposure.
