Hello rally fans :)!
I don’t think I’ve written about this topic but it caused quite a stir and unhappiness among rally fans (because quite frankly Saudi Arabia doesn’t really deserve to be in the calendar and FIA [as per usual]smelled only their money).
Anyway continuing :)…
Saudi Arabia is taking another step towards joining the calendar. More details have been posted about the WRC’s candidate event, which will be held from 1st - 3rd May this year. If we look at the calendar the rally is set for November 27-30 - season finale!
This rally will serve as a test for Saudi Arabia’s potential inclusion in the WRC, following FIA requirements for all new events. With the country already hosting high profile motorsport events like Formula 1, Formula E, and the Dakar Rally, there’s a strong push to bring WRC into the mix. BUT MIND YOU!!!! They got a WRC contract for 10 years… with what - MONEY!!!🥳🥳🥳
The candidate event’s service park will be based at the Jeddah F1 circuit, ensuring good infrastructure. For now, it is expected that the rally cars will be serviced in the F1 pit garages (lmao). The event will feature 12 special stages, covering a total of 192 kilometres, with the full route measuring just under 510 kilometres. Organizers aim to create a challenging rally that aligns with the unique characteristics of WRC events. It remains to be seen whether WRC teams will be able to send any cars to the candidate rally, as the Canary Islands WRC round takes place just a week earlier🙃.
The candidate event in October will be the first real test of Saudi Arabia’s WRC potential. If it proves successful, we could see a brand new Middle Eastern round on the calendar in the near future.
