Onboard rally video of the day - Tommi Makinen with Mitsubishi Lancer Group A at Monte Carlo Rallye 1999

in Rally5 days ago

Hi, friends!

Sport of rallying has changed so much over last 25 years and when I watch this onboard, I can hear number of less spoken notes from co-driver in compare with these days top guys.

Tommi Makinen is a legend of sport who won four consecutive World Rally Championship titles from 1996 to 1999 and he said/thought that no one after that won't make it happen thr same way.

But he was wrong because Seb Loeb came soon and won nine titles in the row. But Makinen won the titles when there was much bigger competition of drivers and manufacturers.

Don't get me wrong but Seb Loeb destroyed the sport with his dominance and it is good that various guys win the title these days.

Did you know that Makinen was tractor driver? Yeah, he was. And that tractor driver won Monte Carlo Rallye four times. Very good, Tommi.

Please enjoy his onboard from 1999 edition of Monte...

What a great post :)! I had no idea he was a tractor driver 🤣

Thanks! Yes he was... :)

Absolute legend - miss seeing him either driving or with Toyota. You nailed it when you explained the “Tommi” era and the Loeb era - totally different time/cars/rules…. Both great in “their times”….

After 2005 and especially 2008 number of manufacturers is in downtrend. Also paying seats at works teams (Ford, Subaru) which was completely wrong. How can paying driver be in works teams!? Only top guys should be works drivers.

100% agree - hopefully with the upcoming changes, they will attract more teams - bring back better and more competition..... lets hope!
