Nostalgic... Thoughtful Thursday #40.

Pleasant greetings to you all.

The coming of the Holy week is a festival that we gave so much thought and pomp to just like Christmas as it significance held eternal value. Back in the day as a child, I recalled that we treated the Holy week as Holy up until Easter Sunday.

Prior to the Holy week, my family would also engage in the Lent fast for forty days but I was not very consistent with mine. Then after the period of Lent, we would pertake in several programs organized by our church. These programs were held to commemorate the happenings in Israel that formed the Holy week.

I recall watching lots of drama presentations of the “passion of the Christ” acted out by the youths of our church. It was truly a splendid time to behold. Then comes Easter Sunday and the bubbling, merry making and celebrations would begin but not without first attending church service, hehe. My family alongside other Christian families would be dressed beautifully for church service. This was a part we never joked with in my family back in the day.

My family and I would all come back from service to wine and dine and I think this was the best part of it all. We shared our food and drinks with our neighbours and the merry making continued till Easter Monday after which all returned to normal.

Now as an adult, not much has changed. I still uphold my family's values and customs during this Holy week but I am still not consistent with observing Lent , at least for now, hehe.

The only notable change for me in my adulthood is that there are no more large gatherings and visits. I don't share cooked food but I give out raw food ingredients like rice, spaghetti, macaroni and sweet potatoes. This is due to the high rate of insecurity. A lot of families have been implicated because they shared food but someone who ate the shared food ended up dying. So I am very cautious about giving out cooked meals.

Family gatherings during this period have also reduced greatly due to my siblings and I working in different cities of the country. Even though we still find ways to communicate with ourselves during this period. It isn't like in my childhood when we all sat together at the table to eat.

Recalling these memories was nostalgic however, reality calls.

Thank you all for reading.

It's nice to recall fond memories of Easter celebrations. Easter celebration made meaning to me back then unlike now. I guess it's because times and situations have changed and I no longer participate more in the Lenten activities and Holy Week activities too like I did back then.

😁😁 adulthood don spoil things ooo. I'm sure that you'll pick up soon enough 👍

Hopefully, I will.

Happy Good Friday!

I love that you still try to keep those traditions going, even though things have changed. Giving out raw food is a smart and kind thing to do, especially with how things are now. Life may not be like before, but the memories will still make you smile. Thanks for sharing.

You're welcome. Thanks for reading me.

Hi there!
Judging from your use of words, is it okay to ask if you are Catholic? Cause it seems so to me, though you didn't mention it in your post.

I see you had a really enjoyable and memorable childhood
It's different for us here, the only time we get all those merry moments and coming together of family and friends is during Christmas and new year.
Easter celebration is not really a big thing here for us in terms of celebration and merriment, we only assemble in the church serving and worshiping, as a remembrance of what the Messiah did for us.
Aside from attending church services and fellowshipping with the brethren, we don't do much.

It's good to read from someone else and also get to know how they celebrate their Easter week.
Happy Good Friday friend!

Happy good Friday to you as well.

I'm not Catholic but my family Revere's the Catholic as the first church , so we participated in their Lent and other programs during the Holy week.

Back then, my church had a lot of youngsters and so in order to encourage them, they were allowed to imitate the drama presentation of the passion of the Christ from the Catholic Church in my city.

Back then, life was simpler an there was little segregation or denomination. I also often followed my neighbour's kids to mass

That was a happy time in my life. Christmas and Easter are both celebrated in my place and they are taken as one and the same because without the birth of the Messiah, there would be no dying for the redemption of man, which means there would be no Easter.

Thanks for reading my memories.... blessings to you🙏

Oh I see, sharing alot with the Catholics
It was good to read your memories and how you celebrate Easter.
Stay blessed!
