Fair warning this is not like my other post. So if you are expecting the usual banter between real me and inuke. I am sorry. I gave inuke the day off, to be honest, it's me who needed the break. And this post is just a rant. So let's talk.
This is one random ass topic that I picked because the concept of luxury is lost on me. Let me give you the context before I waste 4-5mins of your time. I was talking to my friend about cars, now for me the car is well a car, it is a mode of transportation. And I agree that there is an aspect of performance to it. The milage, the control and the design. In fact I would argue that it is just a mode of transportation and you are not going to live in there. It has a function. Now my question is what is it that the luxury class of cars offers that costs a fortune? Why are we suddenly talking about the car? Because I saw one shiny new BMW probably 7 series stuck in traffic like every other car here in Trichy. A Tier 2 city in Tamil Nadu. So during the discussion, I came to know that there are cars that cost 6.8Cr (Approximately 800k in USD) and above.
Now, that's an amount that is surplus to my retirement plan. Meaning If I had that much in my account I would have started the restaurant business in Andaman Island. And would send in the flight tickets to my boss for the opening ceremony. Anyway, we are getting distracted by the ifs. The point is some people would spend that kind of money on getting from point A to point B.
So the argument was made about the material used in those luxury cars. Now I have never been into one, But I have been into some nice spacious cars with screens and it was really wonderful. Seat was nice, the Height and everything was good. I fail to imagine how much more comfortable a car can get.
The dude made the second point about the performance. Which I mistook for mileage and countered it that even the broken model of Maruti can beat that number. But he corrected me immediately that performance and mileage are two different things. Now again this was lost on me, Performance translates to a powerful engine and heavy-duty machine kinda thing and they are ready to compromise on fuel efficiency. Again the question arises why would anyone need a car that is capable of going fast enough to be on a circuit for grocery shopping in 4th Cross Road in Tillai Nagar? And in what world a good fuel-efficient machine is not good enough?
Now the final argument by the guy was the dumbest but somehow it made sense. The final argument was the Status symbol. So if you own such a luxury car means you are a successful person. And how dumb is this statement? if you have to tell people that you are successful by showing off, Are you really successful? So all the arguments about the performance and premium material are bogus.
I think being from a middle-class family somethings hardcoded in me that I fail to see. I could be wrong, but the justification that cars are status symbols is absurd to me. It just feels wrong to me.
Let me ask a simple question if you were to choose between two pens that does the same thing and provide the same grip and same quality of ink, basically the same. But one has a shiny logo and costs 1000 bucks and other one is 12 bucks. Which one would you pick?
TLDR; I am jealous of rich people
Hey Folk..
"Yo!!! This is so lame. Are you really going to post that?" Inuke interrupted. He had to make an appearance.
"Yes, and I am not stopping. Why are you back so early?" I asked.
"Hmmm! One day I am not there and this is the state of your posts. Ha! Go ahead with your lame post, will tell you about my adventure some other time. Ciao!!" inuke left without answering my question.
Sorry guys,
Thanks for stopping by. Also if you know what luxury means please let me know. So that I can stop feeling this jealous. I mean that dude was going grocery shopping in a car that was worth more than my retirement plan. As always, a Bug hud to IndiaUnited, Be Awesome and the ThoughtfulCommunity. for their love and support. 💟☮️

There is no simple answer to that, and I think it partly depends on culture. I know where I live (suburban USA) luxury often has to do with impressing other people--conspicuous consumption.
When we need a new car in my family, my husband always asks for the same things: a full spare tire and a radio. That's luxury for him. :))
Exactly my point, I don't know your husband but I already like him. 😅
I hate the idea that luxury is something to impress others. But that the reality. Isn't it?
लक्ज़री मतलब दिमाग में जब कोई धमासान न मचा हो, वासुकी ताल जैसे सरल और शांत....ही लक्ज़री है।
Ye bhi sahi approach hain. Matlab BMW7series mein baith kar bhi agar rona hain to kahe ki Luxury. ❤️☮️
Dil jeet liya bhai.
