When it comes to talks about staying connected to others, it can be quite hard. Especially in this present world where everyone tends to be self-absorbed. Not that there is anything wrong with being so self-involved but yes, it is also good to try to stay connected with as many people as possible.
Because no matter what, we do need people. That’s one thing about Nigerian mothers, you’ll always see them attending people’s parties, buying gifts or the aso-ebi, some do it because they just love parties, others, like my mother, do it because as she says, “it is someone that will attend yours too, if you don’t attend theirs now, however will they turn up for you?” Talk about strategic positioning.
Personally, I’m not gonna lie, I don’t check up on my friends as often as I should, in fact, my phone hardly rings. Even for my social medias, I only have about one or two people I only talk to. And I admit, it is a lonely life. But I am in such relationship with my friends such that we do not have to talk every day, but the one time we catch up, it’s a synergy!
However, I do two things that I believe somehow plays an important role in keeping me connected to these people even through the physical and emotional distance.
First thing is, I have a personal blog where I share words daily. Some days it is scriptures, other times, it is real-life story where they may draw moral lessons. I have had a few people tell me how much my daily posts uplift their spirits so that to me, is something beautiful.
Another thing I do is sending monthly emails to my friends and family.
On the first day of each month, I send a happy new month message alongside some sweet words and prayers. Some respond, some don’t. But at least, I know they’ll all see it.
In all honesty, I don’t even remember some of these people, they’re just all in my mailing list. Some are friends from Uni, from church, different places I imagine. But at least, if someday we ever need to connect, again, my act of monthly email reach-out will be a dot to start from.
