RE: Do we have the ability to change?

The foundations of human personality are formed by the average age of seven. That's why the education and training people receive in childhood are so important.
Everything learned or experienced over time adapts to the concepts experienced in the early years.
If people experience a very traumatic event or near-death, the foundations of their personality can change dramatically.

Some people possess a wonderful ability to adapt to change, but in general, human beings tend to resent change, even rebel, and may fight against it.

It's a very interesting topic to discuss; one could talk about it for days. There are numerous historical references, and of course, there's no shortage of anecdotes about people's resistance to change over time.
