I've taken up using Reddit out of curiosity lately.
While Reddit is like any other Web 2.0 platform in the sense that its users are guests only and subject to potential deletion at the drop of a hat, it has one particularly annoying feature. The moderators of many subreddits (communities) have an annoying habit of closing entire threads suddenly and without warning. This feels like going to a club where people are having group conversations and having security order people to stop talking about a certain topic, to get up and walk over to some other group to continue discussing another topic at random moments.
Communities on Hive are much better. It is possible to be muted by the community owners but muting on Hive is something very different from Web 2.0. Muted authors' comments are shown by most front ends but grayed out and require an extra click to be shown. There is no way for community owners to stop any front end from showing muted authors' comments or even replying and everything on chain is legible for as long as the chain runs. This is a very good compromise that makes it possible to both uphold standards of civility while limiting the power of community owners and moderators to control information.
