Al principio cuando me deje crecer el cabello y la barba mi familia no tenia ningun problema con mi apariencia, incluso mi hija menor se entretuvo mucho conmigo porque ella tiene entre sus juguetes un set de peluqueria, fueron largos ratos de peinados, pero cuando mi barba y cabellos llegaron al punto que los tengo ahora, me dicen que me veo feo y desaliñado, no les preste atencion hasta que vivi el efecto halo.
Long Beard, Short Prejudices - A Victim of the Halo Effect [SPA/ENG]
At first, when I started growing my hair and beard, my family had no problem with my appearance. My youngest daughter even had a lot of fun with me because she has a hairdressing set among her toys, and we spent long hours doing hairstyles. But when my beard and hair reached the point they are at now, they tell me I look ugly and disheveled. I didn't pay attention until I experienced the halo effect.
En mi adolescencia siempre quise tener el cabello largo, creo que influenciado por los grupos musicales que escuchaba en ese entonces, la mayoría de música rock y sus integrantes lo usaban así. Pero tener barba y el cabello largo es contraproducente cuando tienes que relacionarte con otras personas, bien sea en el trabajo, los estudios o incluso la iglesia, por lo tanto siempre lo tuve corto.
In my adolescence, I always wanted to have long hair, I think influenced by the musical groups I listened to at that time, mostly rock music and its members wore it that way. But having a beard and long hair is counterproductive when you have to interact with other people, whether at work, school, or even church, so I always kept it short.
La realidad es que lo atractivo, ordenado, pulcro, bien vestido, etc, recibe mejor atención, vende más, atrae mas, a eso se le conoce como el efecto halo, no me refiero a ser bien parecido, ya eso es algo natural, me refiero a cuánto mejor cuidamos nuestra apariencia mejor somos atendidos, porque cuando las personas nos ven bien, asumen que lo demás en nosotros es bueno aun sin conocernos.
The reality is that what is attractive, neat, clean, well-dressed, etc., receives better attention, sells more, attracts more. This is known as the halo effect. I'm not referring to being good-looking, that's something natural, I'm referring to how much better we take care of our appearance, the better we are treated, because when people see us well, they assume that everything else about us is good even without knowing us.
A pesar de saber todo esto, esta es mi apariencia ahora y me siento feliz, estoy despreocupado porque paso ahora más tiempo en casa y poco me tengo que relacionar con otros. Quizás todo me vale burger ahora porque estoy cansado de vivir en una ciudad donde las personas son muy superficiales y narcisas. Cuando vas a una tienda primero te escanean de arriba abajo antes de atenderte.
Despite knowing all this, this is my appearance now and I feel happy. I'm carefree because I now spend more time at home and have little interaction with others. Maybe I don't care about anything now because I'm tired of living in a city where people are very superficial and narcissistic. When you go to a store, they first scan you from top to bottom before serving you.
Precisamente esto me pasó recientemente, entre a una tienda de repuestos buscando una pieza para mi carro, en lugares como estos entran mayormente hombres, muchos de ellos mecánicos llenos de grasa, lo menos que esperas que en un sitio así haya prejuicios. Cuando fue mi turno para ser atendido, note que le tocaba hacerlo a una vendedora, pero cuando me vio, le pidió a un compañero que lo hiciera por ella.
This is precisely what happened to me recently. I went into a parts store looking for a piece for my car. In places like these, mostly men enter, many of them mechanics covered in grease, the least you expect is that in a place like this there are prejudices. When it was my turn to be served, I noticed that it was a female salesperson's turn to do it, but when she saw me, she asked a colleague to do it for her.
Aunque no dejo que estas cosas no me afecten, molesta la actitud de las personas, porque si quisiera me corto el cabello y la barba, me visto bien y se que me atenderán mucho mejor, pero hay quienes no pueden simplemente corregir cosas, y pasan toda su vida siendo ignorados o maltratados.
Although I don't let these things affect me, people's attitude is annoying, because if I wanted to, I would cut my hair and beard, dress well and I know that I would be treated much better, but there are those who simply cannot correct things, and spend their whole lives being ignored or mistreated.
