In a very well known State Bank in my country, my job at the beginning was that of Commercial Credit Analyst, I came from a Private Bank but I soon managed to fit in with the work team. It turned out that a new Board of Directors came in and as a consequence there was a restructuring of positions and departmental units. There were the typical power struggles within this type of institution. Given the aforementioned restructuring, I was transferred from the Credit Area to the Portfolio Collection Area, I really did not know much about this operational area regarding the use of the system, my new coworkers were surprised because they did not justify the presence of a person coming from credit within the Collections Department.
Me fueron asignadas la revisión de las tablas de amortización de Créditos Hipotecarios y su correspondiente cobranza. Con la ayuda mayormente del personal del Departamento de Contabilidad, y de los integrantes del Departamento de Cobranzas (que en un principio me trataban de manera hóstil), fui dominando el Sistema, hasta que aprendí a usarlo más o menos en un mes.
I was assigned to review the mortgage loan amortization tables and their corresponding collection. With the help of the Accounting Department personnel and the members of the Collections Department (who at first treated me in a hostile manner), I mastered the system, until I learned to use it in about a month.
Mi formación Financiera me permitió revisar las tablas de Amortización una a una y me percate que de que existían operaciones que se liquidaban el mismo día con montos similares e iguales condiciones, sin embargo las cuotas a cancelar eran muy diferentes, otra situación un tanto extraña era que operaciones con montos muy inferiores a otras personas se reflejaban con cuotas más altas que la que le correspondían.
My financial training allowed me to review the amortization tables one by one and I realized that there were operations that were settled on the same day with similar amounts and the same conditions, however the installments to be paid were very different, another strange situation was that operations with much lower amounts to other people were reflected with higher installments than the one that corresponded to them.
Oportunamente informe al Jefe del Departamento la situación que se estaba presentando con sus respectivas pruebas, todo esto con la ayuda de personal de contabilidad y los analistas de cobros que se aliaron conmigo para solucionar estos problemas que lograron entorpecer las labores de cobro.
I promptly informed the Head of the Department of the situation that was occurring with their respective evidence, all this with the help of accounting personnel and collection analysts who teamed up with me to solve these problems that managed to hinder the collection work.

Sistema Alemán /German System

• Constant periodic principal amortization, (the debt principal always decreases by the same amount).
• Interest is decreasing, since it is calculated on the balance owed.

Sistema Americano / American System
• Todas las cuotas resultan constantes excepto la última.
• El capital es amortizado en la última cuota.
• Los intereses pagados, son constantes en cada cuota.

Hicimos la revisión correspondiente caso por caso y dimos con el problema. Las tablas de amortización que se utilizaban para este tipo de operaciones no era homogéneas, los analistas usaban las tablas de amortización que le proporcionaron a través de un archivo Excel y que cada uno tenía grabada en su computador a su mejor parecer.
We did a case-by-case review and found the problem. The amortization tables that were used for this type of operations were not homogeneous, the analysts used the amortization tables that were provided to them through an Excel file and that each one had saved in their computer as they saw fit.

The Analysts, the Chiefs and the Vice-President were stunned, and the order was given to restructure all the Mortgage Loan operations, and a Standards and Procedures Manual, non-existent to date, began to be prepared for Mortgage Loans, and the German System was adopted as the basis for calculating the amortization tables.
En el Departamento de Cobranzas todos los Analistas colaboramos, e incluso se necesitó la colaboración del Area de Sistemas Informáticos para que realizaran el Software adecuado (las tablas de amortización) tanto en crédito como en cobranzas.
In the Collections Department all the Analysts collaborated, and even the collaboration of the IT Systems Area was needed to develop the appropriate software (the amortization tables) for both credit and collections.
El duro esfuerzo que realizamos en el Departamento de Cobros hizo que todos nos enfrentaramos al cambio, e incluso mucho personal tuvo que retirarse ya que se sintió incomodo por realizar un trabajo que según estos era responsabilidad del Departamento de Crédito.

Implícitamente, se incrementó la rentabilidad de la institución.

En lo particular, me sentí útil a la Organización, adquirí nuevos conocimientos, logre interactuar con otros Departamentos que apenas conocía y me quedo la satisfacción de anticipar una situación que pudo haber traído grandes consecuencias al banco, además logre adaptarme al Departamento de Cobranzas.

Posteriormente, recibí una felicitación de parte de la Vice Presidencia del Area de Crédito y fui llamado a liderizar un nuevo proyecto relacionado con Créditos Personales, ya con personal a mi disposición y con un nombramiento de Gerente.
