                                                                                         -Pablo Neruda

Growing old is obligatory, growing up is optional" (anonymous).

A day like any other dawns on the farm, Grandpa Pepe brings corn to the chickens, ducks and turkeys that are in the barnyard, the chores are going very well when at the time of watering the plants he stands on top of an anthill, goodness gracious, Don Pepe jumped up and down because of the bravery of the little ants.

Between teeth and grumbling, he complains about the bites when suddenly he hears a voice that says- calm down Grandpa Pepe those little bites pass quickly, that's why I eat them, besides those little red ones are spicy- Don Pepe looks desperately but sees no one, he calms down and looks patiently thinking about the trick of some truant, but he still sees no one.

Behind a bush, behind a bush, he sees a little ants, but he sees no one.

Behind a bush that he sees moving, a rooster comes out, the most beautiful one, with red plumage like the one who dresses up, and Don Pepe observes him as if waiting for something from that rooster, nothing happens and the grandfather says to himself -the years are hitting me, I think I am going crazy- and decides to go to drink water and rest.

The next morning the old grandfather says -the years are hitting me, I think I am going crazy- and decides to go to drink water and rest.

The next morning the old farmer returns to his daily chores and it is his turn to feed the birds and then go back to watering the plants, this time watching the ant hill, he thinks - no way today they are not biting me - and he laughs, Suddenly he hears the same voice of the previous day but this time saying - you saw and then they say that the old parrot does not learn to speak, hahaha - after that laugh, Don Pepe now more worried desperately looks for the source of the voice, which does not happen and almost terrified he leaves.

After several days of forced rest, Don Pepe decides to return to his chores with some fear but firm as always, this time keeping an eye on everything, when looking up he sees in the tree a figure that resembles a child that he cannot distinguish among the leaves, but in his clever wit he says firmly - aha I saw you, don't try to hide - and indeed the little guy answers - you had not done it because you didn't want to, I have been here every time you have come - to which the old man responds in an imposing manner - come down from there right now, let yourself be seen - the small figure slowly begins to descend from the tree until Don Pepe notices his small stature on the ground, and in his eagerness to know who he is, he asks - gee and who are you, or rather who are you? - he hears a deep sigh and the voice of that thing he didn't know it was - let's see, make yourself comfortable so I can explain - the old man, crafty and half surly, tells him - you are in my land, so what I say is done here, and I say you tell me who you are and where you came from - the little boy answers - I am Daros, the fairy of life - the old man incredulously asks - and why are you here - he says - I have been following your steps since very far away - he says - I have followed your steps since very far away. he says - I have followed your steps since I was very little, sometimes we played together and today you no longer remember me because your heart is no longer that of a child - - you see and hear me again through the thin line of time that exists between life and death - somewhat stigmatized, astonished he shakes his face and takes some water which he also pours on his face, turns and continues seeing Daros.

A sepulchral silence invades Pepe's body to the point of shaking him, Daros calmly exclaims - today is a special day, because you are a child again - With fright in his eyes and trembling in his voice he asks - why do you say that, I don't understand, tell me, don't be silent, tell

With desperation Pepe loses control and runs to his room where he cries inconsolably, and falls into a deep sleep where neither pain nor worry exist.

The next day he gets up very early and as he stretches out in bed, he hears a voice that says - Pepito, get up, it's time to go to school - he jumps up as he could not do it for a long time, he looks at himself in the mirror and realizes that his body was that of his childhood and recognizes the voice that called him as that of his beloved mother.

He burst into tears and grief embraced him, in the room he heard another voice saying - you remember me, I waited for you and finally you are here-

A walk blurred all his reality and seeing his surroundings he walks to the door and Daros warns him - be careful with what you see - without paying attention he went out to the living room of that house and looks at a coffin to which he approaches without fear, the lid is open and he gets ready to see, when he looks out he sees his body, insert, cold, dead and turns to look at Daros who replies - I warned you-

It took Pepe a couple of seconds to imagine what was happening and without hesitation he shook himself as if he wanted to wake up from a nightmare, but the more he moved and squeezed the more he realized that it was a cruel but real truth.

Daros inferred - everything is real, only in different times, you listened to your mother because she is the one you miss the most and you see yourself in the coffin because it is death you fear the most.

He continued - that's life, we ignore every moment and every person thinking that they will always be there and when we realize that life has passed and those beings that mark our lives with love and teachings are gone and the memory brings longing and even remorse for not having done enough for them.

Pepe child - between sobs says - I remember all the moments I lived, it seems unbelievable all this that today I see, hear and feel.

In the body that lies in that cold sarcophagus, I had many adventures, my mother the great love of my life, that day, the last day I saw her she told me - live every second as the last - and I went out to travel the world and when I came back she was gone, death surprised her one winter morning and neither farewell nor crying, oh mother how much I miss you.

Daros in a gesture of empathy said - calm, all is not lost, just listen to your heart and the universe will give you back what you love so much, always remember me and live, live.

At that very moment Don Pepe opens his eyes in the middle of several people in the passage where he remembered he was stung by those ants, coming to his senses, he asks what happened, to which his wife answers - apparently between jumps because of the ants' stings you fell and hit your head-

Think - everything has been just a coincidence, it's all just a coincidence.

He gets up very carefully and heads for home, but something makes him turn around, slowly fixing his gaze on that bush above the tree as if confirming his thoughts, realizing that in that place where he is looking for is that little boy he met through Daros who raises his little hand and says goodbye.

"I don't want much from life. I just want to know that I tried everything I wanted, I tried everything I could, I loved what was worthwhile, and I lost only what was never mine."

                                                                                                                                                                                      -Pablo Neruda
