How things have changed

When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I thought as a child, I judged as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

1 Corinthians 13:11 King James Version 1960

As the verse expresses it, when we are children we think and act like children and as the years go by we live different stages and we leave behind the ways of thinking and being that we had before, thanks to the education of our parents, to the academic formation and also to the maturity that we are acquiring.

For example, I remember that as a child I loved to be barefoot, but when I reached puberty and to this day I can not stand being barefoot, I feel that my feet get very dirty, in short, it disgusts me.

I remember that as a child both me and my sister were assigned chores, such as taking out the garbage, to mention a few, one did not exactly do it willingly, but that gave us an idea of the commitment and habits that should be had at home, when we started working, we were also taught that we should be responsible for the payment of some service.

At the same time I remember that my grandmother was the pillar of the house, I don't know if it was because she liked it or because without realizing it she ended up carrying most of the weight, but as the years went by her strength was waning.

So as she was releasing responsibilities, either because she could not or because she noticed that it was time for someone else to take over, things were changing, but the change began to accelerate when my grandmother fell into bed and had to take care of her, it was a strong routine for my mother and me, one changed diapers and bedding, the other fed and gave baths with cloths.

After her death and then my mother's, I took on much more, such as the total payment of services, being the definitive representative of the home, the cleaning that before was something shared, in short, all the work and responsibilities that have to do with having a home.

Now, as all this has changed, my life, in terms of habits, interests or lifestyle, well, easy, I value more the moments of rest, because at home there is never lack of something to do.

I understand perfectly the reasons why my mother and my grandmother would get so angry when one almost immediately dirtied something that they had just cleaned, I also understand why sometimes the best way to give us lessons was to stop doing something so that we would notice the lack that it made, for example, stop boiling water, because we were experts in drinking it, but not in putting the pot of water to boil or at least notifying that the water had run out.

Now I am one of those who take advantage of everything and try not to waste, because I believe that nothing should be wasted. In a few words, my life has been turned upside down.

I remember how I loved to eat butter and honey as a kid. Now, I can’t stand those unless the butter is on bread or the honey is in tea.
