AS ECOWAS ULTIMATUM TO NIGER COUP PLOTTERS ENDS TODAY: ARE WE ABOUT TO SEE A WAR FOR DEMOCRACY?

in Hive Naijalast year

Democracy appears to be facing challenges in West Africa, with several elected governments being toppled by soldiers. The 48-year-old sub-regional bloc, ECOWAS, is under pressure to address this trend. Recent successful military coups in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Niger have raised concerns. The arrests related to a suspected coup plot in Sierra Leone further highlight the instability.

The coup plotters have justified their actions by citing harsh economic conditions in some of the region's poorest countries. ECOWAS, led by Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu, has an opportunity to show its effectiveness.

The organization has threatened to use force to reinstate deposed President Mohamed Bazoum if the coup plotters do not comply within seven days. However, Burkina Faso and Mali have expressed solidarity with the junta in Niger and warned against the use of force.

The situation in Niger is crucial, given its role in the fight against jihadists in the Sahel region. The country's fall under military rule could have significant implications for the fight against terrorism and insurgency in the area, including potential effects on Nigeria.

The success of the coup in Niger could indeed weaken ECOWAS' power and reinforce the perception that the bloc is ineffective in preventing such actions. The use of force in Niger, as warned by Professor Jibrin Ibrahim, could lead to a significant crisis for ECOWAS, Nigeria, and the Sahel region, given the country's size and scattered population.

There are concerns that the involvement of Western countries, encouraging Nigeria to intervene, might not be solely for the region's sake but for their own interests. Geopolitical dynamics may come into play, with potential implications for West Africa, as Mr. Ibrahim pointed out. The situation in Niger could potentially become a battleground for power display between the West and the East, with US and French bases present in the country and Russia posturing as an ally to Africa.

This complex geopolitical situation poses significant risks and challenges for the region, and any military campaign must be approached with caution and careful consideration of the potential consequences.
