Fear: A Companion We Never Choose

in Hive Naija19 hours ago

Fear, a shadow in the night,
Whispering doubts, dimming the light.
A fleeting ghost, yet it feels so real,
A heavy weight, a wound to heal.
It grips the heart, it clouds the mind,
A shackle unseen, yet tightly bind.
But face it strong, let courage steer,
For strength is born when we conquer fear.

Fear—it's the shadow that follows us all, uninvited but persistent. It doesn’t matter who you are or how much whatever you have or how much you’ve conquered; everyone (tall, short, white, black, slim, fat, male, female) has it. Fear always finds a way to remind you of its presence. Sometimes it whispers in moments of uncertainty, and other times, it just shouts out in the face of danger.

Isn't it strange? How something so uncomfortable can feel so natural.

Fear, even more than just being an emotion, is instinct, survival, and vulnerability all in one.

We fear because we care: about living, about losing, about the unknown.

Fear can be paralyzing. It keeps us awake at night, makes our hearts race, and can cause us to change decisions. But let’s not forget, fear isn’t all bad, right? Fear can serve as a warning system. It sharpens our senses, pushes us to act, and sometimes, saves us from harm.
Think about the times you hesitated at the edge of a risky decision —was it fear holding you back or protecting you?

I have found out that one good way to fight fear is having knowledge. What we understand, we can face. What we’ve experienced, we can navigate. However, even with all the knowledge in the world, fear isn’t something we can erase entirely. It adapts, finding new ways to challenge us. Sighs.

But I believe that's what makes life so fragile, so beautifully human. The fact that fear reminds us of our limits. No matter how strong, wise, wealthy or experienced we become, there’s always something that can shake us. A loss. A failure. A moment where we feel powerless.

But you notice that it’s in these moments of vulnerability that we find our strength (like the saying goes "what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger"). Fear humbles us, forces us to confront our fragility, and teaches us resilience. Those who’ve faced fear time and time again carry scars—not just on their bodies but on their souls. And those scars? They tell stories of survival, growth, and hard-won wisdom.

Being in a constant mode of survival, however, can make fear a continual companion, lurking behind one's every success. Making one begin to ask questions like: What if I fail next time? What if the loss is too great? Winning, as it turns out, can sometimes make us even more afraid than losing ever did.

Remember that fear may not leave us, but neither does our ability to grow stronger because of it.

At the end of the day, it’s not about mastering fear. It’s about learning how to use it, how to dance with it, step by step.

Thanks for stopping by😊.
