Pet peeves are things that annoy or irritate someone, often in a minor but persistent way. They can be habits, behaviors, or actions that get under someone's skin and cause frustration or annoyance. What's interesting is that these pet peeves vary from person to person, and often, when we're the ones doing the annoying behavior, it doesn't seem so bad.
My own pet peeve is not listening actively to conversations and getting easily distracted by my thoughts. I think this started because I've always been surrounded by people who talk a lot - I mean, they can talk for Africa! Most of the time, I'm trying to study, meditate, or brainstorm ideas, but I end up getting distracted.
Before I knew it, I started tuning people out. You might be talking to me, and I might look like I'm listening, but if you ask me a question about it, I'll be clueless. One of my friends was talking to me about football, and sometimes then I had little interest in football and would have liked it if he was talking about relay racing. So many ideas started running through my head, and soon I was completely lost in thoughts and still nodding and saying yeah! Like I was listening. I didn't even notice he had switched to another important topic, and he had been saying a lot of things about our chemistry test.
He noticed and asked me what he said last. I told him, as I was already caught with no escape route, that I wasn't listening. He was a bit mad but didn't retaliate much and went back to his seat. It was the next day when I was looking for a note which I had unconsciously allowed him to borrow, that I found out it really pissed him off. I had yelled to the class for more than 20 minutes, then I saw it with him as the only book on his desk. I was pissed but knew that I had caused that. He came back in a joking manner, saying "Next time you will hear word." That was a funny day, and that day I had so much fun too.
Some other common pet peeves that people have include:
- Chewing with your mouth open: No one wants to see or hear you smacking your food.
- _Touching the second party hair: My big bro does that to my big sis alot. They always end up making me laugh.
- Interrupting conversations: It's rude and annoying when someone cuts you off mid-sentence.
- Not covering your mouth when you cough: This is not only annoying but also unhygienic.
- Talking loudly on your phone in public: Keep your voice down, please!
- Double dipping: Don't dip that chip twice, it's just gross!
