Altered Belief

in Hive Naija11 hours ago

Age and time plays the change agent when it comes to our beliefs. We all at one stage in life had certain beliefs that got swept down with time, this believes were instilled from folktales, our environment, and probably an experience that occurred more than once.. let's say my grandma told me lizard eat bones, as a child I trust her words and whatever she says I believe is the truth. It'll take more than convincing to pull me out of that belief, but time and age does easily and it's the more reason why you didn't believe me the first time I said it.

I've had certain beliefs in the past, some got swept down with age, some by time, but there was a certain belief that only experience made the change. It wasn't as easy as baking a cake, I needed something more than small talks and stories to help me pull out of it and when I finally did, I saw life differently, like being pulled out from a dark hole to the top of a mountain to see the world.

I alway believed all it took to be successful was Hard work. Just work hard and you'll become whatever you dreamt of becoming. We hear these words every time from parents and people around us, laying emphasis on hard work like it was all that mattered for one to become who he dreamt of becoming. There was this fear of becoming less than you wanted when parents stressed on the need to work hard, like one's destiny was tied to his ability. It was never hard work. The important element for success wasn't even tied to hard work, a truth so bitter for those who wake up every 3am for work and close at 9pm. Realized life is more than your ability, it wasn't even what you offered.

Presenters from the podcast would just wrap it up as hardwork and dedication. Hard work is good, dedication is great, however, their reward depends on luck and chance, not a certainty of their work being done. Most people who work the hardest just have enough to eat and not excess. Luck and chance happens to everyone, even a lazy man is likely to have his luck on success and the hardworking man striving for years without a chance to his dream. Before we get into a feud on hard work, let me portray the points and my belief in a simple structure and what changed my belief.

I've seen a man who worked hard all his life and died poor, and I've seen one who worked less than the other and found his breakthrough. My belief at one point was, "Only those who work hard have the light of success and the poor around me, were some lazy folks who probably didn't work hard enough to break their current state". So it was more like, the rich work hard, the poor are lazy, until I realized my hard work yielded me less than I needed and one who didn't work that much had enough above their needs. It wasn't about hard work after all, but luck and chance, it finds those it pleases.

That's a good realisation and I like that it was your experience that changed your belief, only hardwork won't do it really.

Yeah hardwork is not all there is to it. Smart work and dedication too maybe but also belief and to learn I guess
