Electoral processes in most countries are faced with malpractices carried out by the government officials or the aspirants/ candidates involved. The option of a free and fair election has become a thing that is non existent because, the peoples right are been trampled upon by the high and mighty who are power drunk and greedy for themselves and their families alone. Sometimes when we carry out elections in our localities, the people are sure of what they voted for and who they want to lead them, but when the results are been counted, we start to hear ridiculous numbers hence taking the people for a fool.
No doubt that the electoral systems in different countries are experiencing a great change thanks to the advancements in technology. Several areas that these technology have improve voting processes are in the areas of: Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) and Verification, which capture the data of the voter and their picture as well, Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), which allows for voting to be done on machines rather than manually or by hand, Online Voter Registration, Blockchain for Election Transparency, use of mobile applications so that people can vote comfortably and without manipulation, use of AI and so on.
However, Despite the growth in technology, some dubious persons still find a way to manipulate results and change them to suit their preferred candidates. The law concerning elections and electoral processes already exist in my country but what should be changed or addressed is the leniency given to the perpetrators of these evil acts. The lackadaisical attitude of the court of law toward the culprits show that penalties for this crimes are not taken seriously and anyone can carry them out without fear.
It would be great if a stricter penalty or punishment are immediately rendered to offenders of the law. Sometimes, court hearings take a long time to sit on a particular matter, thus dragging justice and leaving people stranded. Again, these political aspirants spend a lot of money during campaign only to reimburse themselves when they are elected in, thus, it is pertinent to Address issues surrounding the high cost of running for office there should be a limit to spending, so that people will not be decievd and the true intent of these candidates can be known.
In conclusion, laws concerning how offenders should be punished for electoral crimes should be handled promptly and as a matter of urgency. To serve as a warning to everyone.
