Sometimes last week or two weeks ago, a friend asked me about the gifts or a gift I have ever received on Valentine's Day. When I told her that it was just a book, she did not believe me. She asked what kind of book it was, and I went on to describe it. She then burst into laughter.
Description of the book:
For Nigerians who were in secondary school between the years 2010 and 2018, you might be familiar with a particular 'Scripture Union' book containing definitions of love and focusing more on God's kind of love—the Agape love. Yes, that was the copy I received on that particular year's Valentine's Day. It remains the only gift I have ever received on Valentine's Day and the most memorable one for me.
How did the day go?
There was this lady, Anita by name, whom I had a deep crush on. She was very much endowed with all the qualities I liked in a lady, which made her irresistible to me, even though I knew getting her to be my girlfriend was going to be difficult. To make matters worse, we were in the same church, which meant I got to see her almost every week no matter how tough it became. Well, I had my shot on her, she acknowledged it, but she decided to place me in the "brother zone", the exact type that comes with "you're my brother in Christ."
I did not relent; I kept on pushing, hoping to get a "yes" from her one day because she was neither angry that I asked her out nor did she distance herself from me. We were just cool.
Valentine's Day of that particular year arrived. It was early in the morning, around 7:00 AM, while I was still asleep. She came to our house, of course, she was well known to my family, walked into my room, and jokingly hit me with what she was holding in her hand, a book, as a way of waking me up. I was surprised to see her in my room that early in the morning.
"You're still sleeping at this time? Take this. I'm out," she said jokingly, dropped the book on the bed, and walked out. Mind you, I think she got a bit shy because my younger siblings were in the room since we all slept together in the same room.

When I checked properly, I saw that it was the 'Scripture Union' book—a book containing Valentine's Day content, one I had already read before because it was very popular. The producers and the Fellowship Union distributed it to every member of their fellowship to educate them about Agape love.
Honestly, I did not mind the Agape love content. All that filled my heart was the fact that a lady gave me a Valentine's gift on a Valentine's Day, and to me, it meant she had feelings for me. Maybe that was her way of saying "yes" to my proposal to be my girlfriend. I did not want to feel bad in case I later found out that the gift was not her "yes." I just decided to live with the assumption that she had agreed.
However, after a long while, I asked her again, and she boldly told me the usual "no." Love is wicked!
Thanks for reading.
This is my entry to #Hivenaija of the week.
