2go: a Social Media app that turned the world around.
Hello everyone, I was pondering on what to write about this week's prompt, as interesting as the topics seemed to be, so many old tech trends flooded my mind and I did not know which one to begin with. As an elder in the tech world, I have seen and also handled some technology and mobile apps for some years and I can at least have a thing or more to say about each of them but for now, let me share my experience on one of the biggest social media platform that trended during the Java and Symbian operating system era. Have you heard of 2go? Did you use it? Can you remember how it worked? If your answers to the above questions are in affirmations then you're an elder statesman and if your answers are No then you're among the Gen Z’s hence, you need to fix your eyes on this post.
2go became a trend during my high school days, and I must say that it was so popular that almost every young person of that time made use of it. It was one of the social media platforms that connected people from around the world. I might not recall how it worked that time because it's been long but I can remember that, besides, a one-to-one chat with a person, there were various rooms and harbours for people with different purposes.
2go was in the mouth of every young person and if you didn't sign up, it was as if the world had left you behind. Hence, many people did everything possible to own mobile devices that support 2go. 2go worked on mobile devices that support Java, Symbian and even Android operating systems and these were mobiles that were hotcakes in the mobile market. I guess, it was the introduction of Facebook and WhatsApp that brought an end to 2go. Even though 2go might not be any longer popular, the impacts it had on users cannot be overstressed. It is the foundation of all the social media platforms we have now.
2go was able to connect people from around the world. It created rooms for people to air their views without being gagged. Friendships with strangers became easy and seamless and the communication gap that was over time severed became accessible. Interestingly, people were able to find their better half which eventually led to marriages. A lot of people were exposed to the outside world for the first time via 2go and since that day forward their lives have never been the same technologically and otherwise.
2go might not be here with us again, but the marks it left behind cannot be forgotten in a hurry. It turned the world around, especially those in Nigeria and across the world. As the world is enjoying Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram and many others, I think credit should be given to 2go for serving as a link for onboarding users into the social media world.
