Two days ago, while I was still in my hometown, I decided to revisit the olden days style of blending things using a grinding stone before the advent of technology.
I spent two weeks in my hometown this holiday season, which is almost ending for a lot of people, and my stay over there exposed me to the kind of chores I haven't done in many years. Technology has been the order of the day, making life easier and faster for people.
Back in my teenage days when I was living in the village, we had no access to an electronic blender, and so most of the blending I did, like melon seed, fresh pepper, cooked corn for our native delicacies, etc., was done using this grinding stone.
My grandma was always on my case, making sure I didn't use mortar to pound certain things, but this grinding stone as it gives a smoother outcome than mortar. Sincerely, it was one of those difficult chores those days and yet unavoidable unless you weren't ready to prepare your food. Each time we were preparing meals that demanded that I grind one or two things, I would feel like disappearing from my house so I could avoid this chore 😃. However, as days pass by, we keep embracing changes and development in different aspects of our lives.
With an electronic blender, I can easily save my time and my strength use in blending with a grinding stone.
Surprisingly, my mom-in-law insisted two days ago that I blend with the grinding stone as the electric blender changes the taste of food... lolz. I couldn't stop laughing at this statement, but I'm not surprised when some of these our-aged parents start seeing things differently from us. Of course, I didn't want to object to her wish, and that's why I decided to use the grinding stone instead, hehehe. I was literally sweating while on the chore. Something I should have done within a few seconds took me like 10 minutes to get done. I must also admit that if you are grinding fresh pepper and wouldn't want to see the seed of the pepper in your meal, then this grinding stone does the job smartly. Is as sharp as a razor blade; I really don't know how, but it hardly gets blunt upon usage.
Overall, it was a nice revisiting of the old, and I loved the experience as my kids kept running to me asking so many questions about why I was blending with such an object, lol. I seized the opportunity to explain to them what it is used for and how they are lucky to be born in this technology era where lots of gadgets are just available for their use.
Another thing I visited was this well water, or better say, water reservoir.
It is commonly called well water in my hometown, and it's done by digging a big, wide pit, then cementing the body both inside and outside, as you can see in the image above...then during the rainy season, we connect it through the zinc and have our water reserved for use. You see, these days with civilization and all that, there's a borehole that we connect to the home, and water runs through pipes and to different points for easy use. There is no need to step out and keep fetching water from the reservoir except for a family who can't afford the modern way of having easy access to water.
Things keep changing, and it's all for good, and revisiting those experiences offered me an opportunity to reflect and see that indeed, I am no longer where I used to be. Hopefully, we will keep experiencing growth in different areas of our lives.

Omoh. I have totally forgotten that such a thing exists mama. That stone… lol. And maybe the older generation is right. I noticed that food cooked on fire wood tastes different than food cooked on gas. One of my elderly neighbours also pointed it out when the child was grumbling about using firewood to cook when they can use gas… lol. Omoh. The children of this generation are lucky o. Even me too
Hehehe 😃...u guys enjoying technology...I hope I wouldn't revisit hard chores again biko
Yea.. firewood cooked food and gas one always a debate 😃
Children of nowadays will only hear this stories but wouldn't taste it hopefully.lol
This is a beautiful reflection on the past and the present! I loved reading about your experience with the grinding stone and how it brought back memories of your childhood, cause it something I haven't seen before. It's amazing how technology has made our lives easier, but it's also great to appreciate the old ways and the values they taught us. The part about your kids asking questions about the grinding stone was particularly sweet! It's great that you're sharing your experiences with them and teaching them about the past. The well water reservoir was also an interesting part of your story. It's amazing how far we've come in terms of access to clean water and technology. Thanks for sharing this lovely reflection with us.
Awwwwwww 🥰
Indeed a nice reflection and I am glad the kids added knowledge to themselves
Thanks for coming through 🤗 That was a beautiful comment from you @quan45
Things have really changed, and it's so hard to convince these elderly people that the blender and the grinding stone do the same job 😅, it's always the same reason, that it changes the flavour of the food 😂. Thank God for technology oo
Hehehe 😃... really hard to convince our elderly ones...but really, it doesn't change taste..I guess it's just their mentality

Yeah I think so too 😅
I remember when we used to go to the village at a young age; I usually admired the way my cousin grinds on the stone effortlessly, so I thought it wasn't hard until the day I asked her to give me to try.
But after several attempts, I actually learned how to use it. I don't know if I would be able to grind with it again because it's been ages.
Hahaha 😂... depending on what you are grinding, it can be a bit tasky..lol
Hopefully, you will experience it again someday
Hope so too. Thank you ma'am 🤗
I am not that old but I have these 3 things several times too😂. The grinding stone was looking like a punishment to me the first day I tried it, I couldn't do it because the pepper were just talking off so I had to ask for help. The mortal was when I visited my uncle 2 years ago, I still don't understand why he prefers that thing to a small manual grinder.
For the well, it was in a clay soilded land and it was super deep. Some well had some kind of iron to help draw water faster while some doesn't.
Your kids just added more knowledge, I bet their friends aren't ready for the gists they have when school resumes 😂.
Hahaha 😂.. serious punishment oo 😂
It's all an experience 😍
My kids are loaded with stories now waiting to resume school tommorw
Ypu cant say no but just have to do it for better days

Sometimes, when we want to cook and there’s no electricity to use a blender, and we don’t want to go outside to blend it, we use a grinding stone instead. Back when I was still living with my grandma before gaining admission to school, whenever she ask me or my two cousins, who were also living with her, to grind pepper or other ingredients and we want to use electronic blender she would ask us not to use it instead we should use grinding stone. Things has really changed in this our era because we are in technology era. Thank you for sharing this with us.
