Promoting Family Planning in Nigeria: A Path to Healthier Families and a Stronger Economy

In recent years, there have been commendable efforts by our government in promoting family planning as a way to improve maternal and child health and also to reduce poverty and manage population growth in Nigeria. Family planning and birth control are becoming so popular recently in my country, and as much as it is approved here, some cultures and religions are still strongly against the use of birth control, with some myths and misconceptions going around the country. Most people's understanding about family planning is just out of it, simply because they are not informed rightly.

Despite this misconception and awareness challenge, the need for family planning and birth control is something to be intentional about in a country like mine. Imagine a country with an overpopulation; imagine a country whose economy is suffering from kwashiorkor; imagine a country with poor infrastructure and no adequate resources to cater for the citizens. Most times I wish that all families will embrace this birth control idea and live an improved life instead of having issues of unwanted pregnancies without resources to take care of the innocent children.

The worst negative part of it is the maternal death caused by complications. Sometimes, mothers conceive just a few months after their previous birth, unplanned, without allowing their body to heal. This action can lead to complications in pregnancy and can cause maternal death. Family planning does not only help to control the number of children a family wants to have but also helps in child spacing as well as improving the health of the mother. Have you wondered why thugs are increasing on a daily basis? One of the reasons is too many children in one family without resources to give them a better life, and thus they are left to fend for themselves at an early age. You will see a family with 8 to 10 children in our civilized world today; that's terrible.

There are varieties of family planning techniques available in my country, ranging from IUD, which the majority of mothers are using, implants, pills, and the rest. Personally, I have been on birth control since my first birth. The fact that I have been birthing my babies through surgeries is enough reason to give my body system adequate recovery before going for the next baby. Each of my three boys have three-year age differences, and it's been family planning and birth control techniques helping me to achieve this. I was educated by the midwife in the hospital, and that helped me to chose the one that will suit my system. So far, I have never had any issues with birth control I am using. I did research on my own and was satisfied and went for it.

Why many women haven't embraced these birth control techniques is simply due to ignorance. They assume that birth control can kill. They assume that once you are on it, no more childbearing for you, but that's a wrong perception. As much as our government keeps advocating that families embrace this measure, there is a need that more awareness is created and people are equipped with the right knowledge.

It will interest you to know that this service is given to us free of charge across all government hospitals in Nigeria. It's left for families to key into it for the good of everyone.

@tipu curate 👍🏾

Thanks so much for the curation
I really appreciate it.

You are more than welcome 🤗

I hope you have a wonderful day ahead ✌🏾

That's really nice
Giving them a form of age space is what I will definitely do when I'm ready to become a father.

Wow...I wasn't even aware of it being free
So why then do some family run away from it?

It's ignorant....they are not aware..it's good to make adequate awareness to families..it will help to a large extent

I understand better now mama
I hope the government makes it known to them soonest.

Birth control is a contentious issue. Even here in the UK where on the one hand we are told there is a low birth rate, yet on the other hand we don't have the facilities to cope for all the people that reside here and that the government let wander in.

We shall be fully aware of birth control and its options though!

Awareness remains an important issue regarding this subject....if this is achieved, then it's possible to experience changes from it's effect in our world today

Mama! You nailed it! In fact these points are so valid! Ignorance and Misconceptions! The complications these have on the mortality rate is more alarming than we think. Children who lose their lives on the street and mothers who die due to complications.

That has been the down side of not embracing family planning and I hope people become more aware of the implications. I mean, there's still natural method for those who fear the birth control techniques available... but no, people will prefer to say that God is the giver of children
Lol

We need birth control in Nigeria at the moment. Except you earn in tens of millions monthly you shouldn't have more than 2-3 children. Why would a couple have 4 to 8 children and very aware that they can take of more than 2... very annoying.

It ia always the children that suffer the effects of poor family planning. I hope a lot of women and their husband get to know about this before entering into marriage at all.

yea, children are left to suffer our bad decisions in life..I really hope we get to start doing better... information are out there to keep us informed

People need to learn to control their desires expecially in this our current economic state

That's the truth bro

To all extent I support and praise you as a practical example. It needs time to heal after birth for mother and baby too. Conception happens by chance but family planning can be worthy to save one's family in all the aspects. Somehow if no better well being and attention would be given to anyone they would become robbers and evil people too. Poverty leads in these cases.

Exactly my dear... family planning is something families should embrace. It will give everyone the chance to give the kids proper training without financial pressures

Many thanks 👍

Anything that works for the good of maternal and child health needs to be encouraged. But then the mother has the right to choose any family planning method that sh feels is safe for her. Maybe more enlightenment campaigns should be embarked on by the government to help the ignorant women have a better understanding.
#dreemerforlife

exactly...it's more of awareness to get the uninformed informed
Thanks for visiting ma

Ignorance is a killer and if one doesn't work to get out of it, they become susceptible to the danger in being ignorant. Imagine such mindset that birth control kills. They need a proper enlightenment and education about family planning and meeting with the right personnel is the best.

Indeed my dear... people with lack of knowledge..that's what is causing all these set backs in planning the family
Awareness remains vital

These are accurate point. If half of the population Of Nigerians can think this way, the rate of unplanned preganies and birthing them to poverty would reduce.

It was quite educative, thanks for sharing❤.

Came in from #dreemer

Awww..glad you found my point educative
Thanks for stopping by

I recently saw a movie where a person purposely released a virus just to reduce the world's population. Family planning is very crucial because the population is increasing so much and the sad part is that the cost of living isn't following suite.I like and agree the points you made.

So me now like this, I am not enough as a daughter for you? You are planning next baby? Thank God for this inleo prompt and #dreemport, I now know where I stand 😑.
