ENTREPRENEURSHIP 101: DIRTY HANDS GREEN RETURNS

in Hive Naija2 days ago

One financial belief we have in the eastern part of Nigeria is that, the major key to riches is business. That is why you will hear names like; Emeka and sons oil and gas limited, Emmy Malaysia the importer and exporter a.k.a oména china 1. There are lots of names that Igbo people give themselves because they are business men. These names are fun to listen to, and to the bearer, it brings a source of pride.

Since my childhood days when I began to handle money for mom, I have always been business minded. If I have money, the major thing I always think of is - how can I turn this one naira into 2?

Though I was skeptical because I fear losing my money, but when I remember that the money was gotten from my mom's purse, all traces of skepticism vanishes into thin air.

During those days, I was my mom's manager. Irrespective of my small size, she trusted me with her business. When I'm in the shop, she can go wherever she wants knowing that I can handle it. Trust a young boy to shift some money for school the next day.

There are lots of business in my mind that I will love to bring about. Lots of them, but he major problem I have is that, I can't actually give my entire time and attention to these business as they are not only time consuming, but demands lots of attention. Also, from the advices I've gotten from people, they kicked against the idea of implying someone to handle the business.

Some of my ideas include, having a POS machine, opening a local gas filling station, and agriculture. The major business on my mind is agriculture.

Most people go into agriculture to feed their family, while a handful do agriculture for the purpose of making money. One thing I love about farming is that - nothing goes to waste, even shit.

With the current price of goods, people who go into farming are sure to make quite a lot of gains. Imagine half bottle of palm oil (not up to 1 liter) is sold at 1 thousand naira. One 25L rubber will probably be sold at 40 or 50 thousand naira. Funny how some time last year, it was sold at about fifteen thousand naira.

No matter the aspect of agriculture you go into, be it poultry, goatry, cattle farming, fishery or even plant farming, there is a lot of gains.

I've seen people build houses and buy cars from farming.

One thing with farming is that it requires your time and attention as well as a huge amount of money to start at a large scale.

But you can decide to start with one aspect of farming, like poultry or goatry and still get a lot of returns.

One major disadvantage about farming, majorly raring livestocks, is that when disaster strikes(sickness) it takes an experienced person to navigate through the storm. Sometimes, even the experienced person finds it difficult to ride the storm.

I will not recommend an inexperienced person to enter this business.

A farmer feeds the nation. farming is at the top of my list of business I will venture in, even with the high risk involved in farming in the northern region of the country, farmers are still seen among the richest in the society.
