Growing up, my father particularly believed in the value of education to him, it was the only key to a successful life, for you to be successful in life, you must earn a university degree, and also graduate with a good university grade. Although my father was not a university degree holder, he believed it was the only key to a successful future. It was a challenge for him to make sure his children went to good schools and never had to be driven from school because of not paying our fees, we had all that we needed regarding our educational needs., he was quick to provide all our needs as long as it was for our education, he believed it was his most important responsibility to his kids.

Although my father was not a university graduate, he had a great value for education and went out of his way to achieve this specific goal of having all of his kids own a university degree as a result of his efforts, I was a dream that he lived up to achieve and he is proud of it, sometimes I wondered why he had so much value to education, maybe his value for education came from a lack of it, or it came as a result of his experience of living his life without a university degree.

My perception of school was different from my parent, I didn’t have much value for education because I didn’t really understand the need for an education, though I was always punctual in class and very active in class activities, I didn’t really have a reason for myself why I was in school. I went to school because my parent wanted me in school, I was serious with my academic activities because they wanted me to be serious, I was doing all for them, this was because I was not really taught the importance of education, but only that it was important for me, and since every other person I knew was going to school, I had to join in the fun.
This resulted in me not having a strong desire for an education for myself, it was only something I was doing because my parent wanted me to and others were doing the same. My teachers would always compare me to my elder brother since we attended the same school, they always said that my brother was smarter and would get to pick up with studies fast, but I was slower and a slow learner. This made my value for school depreciate further and brought in a reason to compete with my brother.

My perception of education changed after I graduated from the university, I understood the value of education which made my value for education different. To me, having a good education was not just about owning a good or successful future, the value of education goes beyond and above that. Education serves us in our everyday life, it trains our minds to analyze information differently, have an evaluation of problems and come up with solutions. It also provides us with independence, having knowledge about some subjects of life gives you an edge to self-reliance, it empowers you in making informed choices, become goal driven and have a positive impact on society, education is the essential key to tackling poverty and the income gap between the poor and the wealthy.
There is a saying “School na scam”. I was in agreement with this, but after finishing my degree program and entering into the labour market, I realized for myself the true importance of education or having an education.

There is actually a lot of things we do for our parents just to make them happy.
And sometimes it feels like a right to them for giving birth to us😁
