I've never liked valentine day. Probably because every year,I was as alone as a ghost in an empty house, which is weird for a romantic. For anyone who knows me personally, I love love.
I adore the feeling, the fast heart beats, the security you feel knowing you have your own person, the smile that lights up your face at their text, image, presence and of course the blush that follows when your friends tease you with your special others name.
Love is a beautiful feeling and valentine's day is an even beautiful day to celebrate the show of love, however. As the years have passed, I have accepted that this girl will not be getting any special valentine treatment yet.
Every year it's a cycle of events on val's day. I go to class at school in session, scroll through social media and “aww” and “God when”, watch a movie, work, sleep and post memes on my status. And honestly every year has been the same.
Some years I give myself hope and disappoint myself greatly but this year rather than disappoint myself with hope, I have decided to just accept reality and spend the day, working and sleeping. However for this prompt, I would share what I WISHED my valentine days looked like.
Prior to the valentine’s day, I would like my imaginary boyfriend to ask me to be his valentine, the proposal will go something like this: I would be on a call with said boyfriend, ranting about a hard day at school, at the same time I would be walking into my apartment in school, while I'm on the call, keys turning the door, i turn on my room light and cluelessly shut the door when i turn around, i see my bed covered in books, shaped into a heart.
A note in the middle asking me to be his Val. I scream into the call and I can hear him laughing at the other side of the phone, he asks innocently why I scream and I mumble over my words as I share why I'm in shock, we switch to video call and he watches me stare at his gift in amazement and me finally saying Yes, As I scan each book I noticed that in each book there's a note of one thing he loves about me and there's blushing and squeals and I'm giddy for the D-day.
On the actual D-day, I'm dressed to the nines for our fun filled day. That morning I sent a heartfelt message and his Val package. He has equally sent mine and my friends and I are gushing over how lucky I am. He sends me the time he'll pick me up, and what to wear for the occasion. I spend the next hour priming, trimming and preparing for his arrival.
My friends are getting ready for theirs as well but of course there's that one single friend that is happy but will spend the day alone. Finally, he arrives, knocks on my door and when my friend opens and does my dramatic introduction, I walk out and his expression is gold. A series of praises and hype follows, leaving me giddy as ever as we go to our reservation.
First off, we head to a cinema to watch a valentine special. The hall is filled with couples of all sorts. Our hands are in each other's, occasionally we are grinning at each other like evil cats but overall we enjoy the movie and our company, after the movie, we play games ranging from virtual reality, football and anything we can grab our hands on. During this session we play our hearts out and laugh at our horrible skills, the game masters are overall happy at our emptying pockets and silly behaviour, next we move to karaoke and show off our horrible singing and dancing skills, our happiness is contagious but it is also beautiful to see and finally to end the night, we have our dinner hot and steamy at our favourite spot.
By the end of the night, I feel my heart expand with joy, I fear it might explode with any more feeling. He drops me off with a goodnight kiss and a few heartfelt words, I do the same and as soon as I step out of the car I hear a loud ringing, I turn back towards him and I'm transported back to reality. My phone is ringing loudly, my mother is calling me to turn garri for our evening meal. Whoops, I slept through Valentine's day again. Welp.
