*** A court in South Florida, United States (USA), condemned former Argentinean sailor Roberto Guillermo Bravo for his responsibility in the Trelew massacre, which claimed the lives of 16 political prisoners and left three others seriously injured, local media reported Saturday. Bravo will have to pay compensation for his crimes and approximately 27 million dollars to the victims' relatives, as part of a case initiated last Monday based on a civil lawsuit filed by the relatives of four victims: Eduardo Cappello, Rubén Bonet, Ana María Villareal de Santucho and Alberto
*** At least two civilians were wounded and some material losses were recorded as a result of the Israeli forces' aggression in the coastal town of Tartous in western Syria, 30 kilometers from the Lebanese border. "The Israeli enemy carried out an airstrike" at around 06H30 local time near the town of Al-Hamidiyah, a military source told the Syrian news agency SANA, identifying the targeted locations as poultry farms.
*** Norway will donate $1 billion to Ukraine for reconstruction and humanitarian purposes. The contribution will be used for humanitarian aid, reconstruction of the country and armaments. "They have the right to defend themselves and we have the right to help them defend themselves," said Norway's prime minister.
*** World oil prices could reach around $380 per barrel if Western countries apply new economic sanctions against Russia and impose price caps on its crude, Bloomberg reports citing analysts at financial conglomerate JPMorgan Chase & Co. According to experts, attempts by G7 countries to reduce Russia's revenues by limiting the amount of money it can get for each barrel it sells would force Moscow to take countermeasures. They warn that Moscow can afford to cut daily oil production by 5 million barrels without significantly damaging its own economy.
*** Byron Lagla, director of Biodiversity of the Environment, Water and Ecological Transition of Ecuador, reported that between June 13 and 20 a total of 32 species were rescued, some of them from wildlife trafficking. The official told El Universo newspaper that, despite the difficulties caused by road blockades due to the national strike, which lasted from June 13 to 30, it was possible to rescue the animals. Among the species recovered were capuchin monkeys, as well as different subspecies of parrots and turtles.
*** The Venezuelan Minister of Energy and sectorial vice-president of Public Works and Services, Néstor Reverol, denounced this Friday a new attack against the country's energy system, which affected the electricity supply in several sectors of Caracas. The official specified that "there was a failure in the Panamericana substation, which feeds the sectors of Nueva Granada, San Pedro, Santa Mónica, Los Chaguaramos and part of Fuerte Tiuna". Later he added that "100% of the load was recovered", detailing that "the failure was due to the explosion of a power transformer affected by a bullet impact, which evidences the sabotage and the continuity of the electric war".
*** American actor Joe Turkel, known for his performances in films such as 'The Shining' and 'Blade Runner', died on Monday at the age of 94 at St. John's Hospital, located in the Californian city of Santa Monica (USA), Variety reported on Friday, referring to a representative of the interpreter. The late actor participated in about 100 films, but is remembered in particular for having acted in three films by American director Stanley Kubrick, such as 'Caste of the Damned', 'Infernal Patrol' and 'The Shining', being in the latter where he played the ghost 'bartender' Lloyd.
*** A team of researchers led by Northwestern University (USA) announced Thursday in a statement that it has developed a small, soft, flexible implant that 'cools' nerves and relieves pain on demand and without the use of drugs. The biocompatible, water-soluble device wraps gently around nerves to provide precise, targeted cooling that numbs them and blocks pain signals from reaching the brain, reads the new study, published in the journal Science.
*** Israel accuses the Ukrainian ambassador to Berlin of "misrepresenting historical facts and trivializing the Holocaust", following his remarks about Stepan Bandera. Andrei Melnik called the Nazi collaborator a "freedom fighter" and stressed that "there is no proof that Bandera's troops murdered hundreds of thousands of Jews".
*** The Texas State Board of Education (USA) rejected a proposal by a group of educators to move to talk about slavery in terms of 'involuntary relocation' in second grade classes. "The board, by unanimous agreement, directed the task force to review that specific language," the Texas state education agency's president, Keven Ellis, said in a statement issued Thursday.
