So, Trump won. Now will anything actually change?

in Informationwar10 days ago

I am quite happy that he won but not as over-the-moon as many of my more politically-inclined/obsessed friends. I say this because things were supposed to be "dramatically different" virtually every time that anyone has won the Presidency in my lifetime and I stood back and watched virtually nothing change in any sort of meaningful capacity.

There is also the question of how politics have become so dirty in the past 10 years or so that we now see the news inundated with legal challenges to virtually anything that a President tries to do. I don't pretend to understand how all of that works but I do recall many many times in which Trump dictated that something was to be done, particularly with the construction of the border fence, only to have various judges strike it down as unconstitutional. There were a lot of other things as well.

Will it be different this time? I seriously doubt it.

I would like to think that something, really anything will be different under a 2nd Trump term, but my political disbelief goes back more than 20 years to make me believe that there will be a bunch of grandstanding and talking but no actual results. This isn't to say that Trump makes idle promises, I don't know if he actually does - it doesn't appear that way from my perspective. For me, I tend to think that it doesn't really matter who is in charge of the United States in their position, that the real running of the country and the world is done by people or organizations that don't get elected.

When you look at how much money was donated to both candidates this time around (it was something crazy like $3.5 billion) you can't help but feel as though a lot of favors are owed to a lot of people and that this may tie the hands of Trump and others who were elected. I think it would be glorious if he were to not keep this unspoken promise because, well, he is already immensely wealthy and doesn't need their donations ever again.

This is something that I think people need to pay more attention to in all major elections: both candidates are given money by groups that you probably don't want to be beholden to such as the military and pharmaceutical industries.

I am hopeful that something could change for the better with a Trump presidency but we all need to recognize that the system is still very much against him and anything that he tries to do will be met with as much resistance as is possible - even if what he is trying to do is for the benefit of the United States. The media will likely continue to take things he says out of context and edit video to make him look bad. The fact that these edits end up being pointed out to the public later on doesn't really seem to matter to most people.

You probably remember the above along with many many other things where the media intentionally altered stuff to make the man look as bad as possible.

There is just one thing that I am hopeful and believe the man can accomplish and that is to end the conflicts in Ukraine and in the Middle East. In his last term he kind of proved that he has some sort of ability to de-escalate conflicts and even bring countries that hate one another together: Whether this is done via intimidation or just by being convincing is anyone's guess but it did seem to be effective the last time he held that office.

While a lot of my friends are just filled with glee over this victory I am a bit more reluctant to celebrate because I have so many years of experience where Presidents didn't really change anything and just put our country further and further into a mountain of debt. If they do actually follow through on putting Musk in charge of streamlining the government you can bet your bottom dollar that this will be twisted and vilified in a way that makes it appear to the public as if Trump was cutting jobs to hurt people that aren't his supporters and honestly, for all those people that are do-nothing employees of the federal government, it is easy to understand why they wouldn't support Trump. He is threatening to take away their meal ticket even though they are likely fully aware of the fact that their position and perhaps the entire division of the government is an unnecessary drain on the public tax fund. I am sure they will make it a race thing as well.

this would be amazing if it were to actually happen

So if you are out there celebrating Trump's victory I wish you the best. Just don't get your hopes too high that anything meaningful is actually going to change. I hope it will, but I have been let down too many times in the past to put too much in the way of sunshine and rainbows on this.

Sort:

All administrations are pretty much the same as far as I can tell. Biden's senility showed us that the president in not in charge of much of anything at all, or at least he wasn't. I wonder, now, if Trump has any power either. I do hope he runs a witch hunt on the Biden family, but I bet he won't, because he is just another player too. A more blustery one, but a player just the same.

I take some heart that RFK jr and his health agenda is out there, that essentially the voters also voted for this. I worry the genocide will continue, and will ultimately be blamed on Trump, another Hitler taking the fall for more powerful persons than he.

But honestly, I do feel safer with Republican control of everything. I knew what I would be getting with Dem control, and it was not going to be good for the like of me. At least there is a chance that Trump will effect changes that strenthens our freedoms or at least not erode them even further, but I would not bet on that.

I take some heart that RFK jr and his health agenda is out there

yeah, i do too. That guy has some whacky ideas mixed up in his overall outlook but for the most part he is pretty sound. I watched a little snippet where he was talking about processed food and it was pretty eye-opening.

Since I am conservative and it appears the R's will have control of all three branches sort of, I will try to remain hopeful that something can change. We'll see I guess!

I think I am watching that video right now. The one on tartrazine and other chemicals. It's in stuff many of us consider to be healthy! He says our nation would get healthier immediately.

All my friends here over the over side of the Pond - where we didn't even get to vote - are all besides themselves that Trump won and can't understand it at all so woefully uneducated are they about the true state of affairs of US politics. I am alarmed at the depths of division in this country - the woke agenda relied on by the left for their vote serves only to divide. They have been willing to destroy democracy to prevent this Trump win even assassinate him - so I think they are scared of something.

Can a 2nd Trump presidency be any different? Maybe, now he has a clear mandate and legally passing legislation should be much easier. It's looking good for crypto. I've always thought a Trump victory would allow the US an off ramp in this Ukraine war that they are losing so badly.

Much depends on the people around him. RFK Jr yes good. However, far too many war hawks making me think there will be no peace in the Middle East.

Meantime there will be extra stimulus/spending with an emphasis on keeping the dollar cheap. I forsee inflation for countries like mine - following eventually for a wave of inflation hitting the US.

Much of this is the same old same old by now. We need to appreciate these are selections not elections. Whose going to be best for the markets?

the markets have been responding like I have never seen before. Someone out there really thinks that Trump is good for crypto or perhaps just markets in general. I'm not in shock that he won. When the media was pushing stats about how Harris was winning in places like Iowa, I knew that they were lying and spewing just anything they could to reassure people.

I hope things can be good, but I have no good reason to think that they will be. Here, in North Carolina in the basically untouchable field of construction management, my livelihood would have been fine if we had elected a box of radishes for president.

The President cannot do much on his own. This is why the cabinet and other advisors he brings with him are crucial. Remember Ben Carson took his pet topic and ran with it. Trump seemingly had nothing to add other than he was proud of his administration's accomplishments with opportunity zones and the like.

I view Elon Musk (hopefully paired with Ron Paul) and RFK Jr the same way. They have their passions and I believe they will have the power to push for change.

I heard someone last night mentioning that Trump's mistake the first term was in not bringing a team to address corruption. General Flynn seems like the only advisor who could have done this, so he was quickly out-flanked and removed. The rehabilitation of the Justice Department is the most important and would be the most difficult.

I recall in the past year some moderation in their actions, which may be enough to make their case that they do not need radical changes. What I want is not to see that they have cleaned up their act, but to see bulwarks against malfeasance that would work in a future corrupt administration. Such measures such as the Special Counsel and FOIA have shown to endure in a weakened state when those in power oppose their use. Special Counsel is appointed by the Attorney General, so simply don't appoint one and you don't have anyone to deal with. FOIA can have the entire document redacted if they want to remain opaque.

Maybe a trigger of the Special Counsel by the the House? Maybe a second opinion on redactions of documents produce via FOIA?

what a wonderful and concise response. So nice to see this every now and then. I had to read that twice to take it all in.

do honestly think with the team he has around him and now having the senate and house of representatives they will be able to get many things done and fixed. You are correct in saying very few things ever seem to change and if you compare the team he has in place this is very different. He as been paying for his entire team for the last 3 months already and not waiting for the end of November like all his predecessors. It seems he learnt a valuable lesson the first time around and now he needs to deliver.

This is a good point. Let's hope that the other side doesn't fight everything he tries to do tooth and nail, but you know they will.

Yes they will, but if you have control of the senate and the house it should be far better.

The more things change the more things stay the same. I would bet government will get bigger and less efficient in the next four years. National debt will keep growing. Situation in Ukraine will not get resolved to anyone's satisfaction unless Putin dies. Non-billionaire people who think Trump will do something for them will be sorely disappointed.

This is the sort of negative opinion that lingers in my mind every day when it comes to national politics. Let's hope that you are wrong.

In the meantime to anyone out there that reads any of this, pay more attention to your local elections, this is where the real, noticeable change in your life can happen. Imagine if people approached local elections with the same fervor that they did this presidential election.

Day 1: #freeross. It's a low bar. He promised. Let's see if he follows through.

oh the MSM is going to jump all over that but you are right, he did promise.
