Hello InformationWar platform!
Crimes against humanity and war crimes will not seize to appear when leaders as well as the militaries of countries will not stop abusing innocent citizens.
It's becoming more predominant this days, just like I wrote yesterday about the Guinea stadium massacre that saw about 157 people killed during a rally in the Guinea capital Conakry and how the country's justice ministry in collaboration with the UN investigation team making sure that the former Guinea military ruler Camara face trial for the massacre that took place in 2009.
Today's post will focus on the trial of the last perpetrator of the 1994 Rwandan genocide and how a trial has been convene to determine his faith and to prove if he's guilty for the 1994 genocide.
A United Nations tribunal in The Hague has opened the genocide trial of a Rwandan businessman captured two years ago after decades on the run, with judges saying the hearing must go on despite the suspect’s decision to boycott it from his jail cell.
Felicien Kabuga, a former businessman and radio station owner, is one of the last suspects sought by the tribunal prosecuting crimes committed in the 1994 genocide, when ruling Hutu majority fighters killed more than 800,000 minority Tutsis and Hutu moderates in 100 days.Source
After apprehending Mr Felicien Kabuga in Paris in 2020 during the covid-19 pandemic after years of being on the run, the UN have decided to open a genocide tribunal for the man who's in his 80s.
At the first instance after his apprehension, he called the allegations against him lies, but he has been in prison since his apprehension 2 years ago.
It should be noted that the major allegations leveled against Mr Felicien is his role in supplying the Hutus weapons and training the Hutu militias before the conflict. Although, he didn't carry arms to fight in the civil war, but the aforementioned allegations is enough to proceed with the trials.
The genocide tribunal trial started today, although he wasn't able to be present but the proceedings continued in his absence.
UN prosecutor Rashid Rashid added that similarly Kabuga did not need to pick up a microphone himself to call for the killing of Tutsi, but founded a radio station that “broadcast genocidal propaganda across Rwanda”.
Prosecutors said the genocide charges cover rapes and sexual assaults, as well as killings. Hutus were encouraged in RTLM broadcasts to “taste” Tutsi women, they said.Source
For his radio station to encourage the Hutus to rape and sexually assault the Tutsi women is completely wrong meaning that there was no regulations governing the broadcast stations.
I'll use the statement of one of the UN prosecutor Serge Brammertz to conclude this post:
"Even if it’s taken more than 20 years, justice can still be successful and that justice can be done,”.
