I think a lot of people are just checking out entirely because of this. I know that in my group of friends speaking about anything political in public is seriously frowned upon. It's just become a taboo subject and perhaps that is a good thing.

Depends what the political climate is in some places. In predominantly liberal places, people speak about politics all the time, but no conservative is allowed to speak. I moved from a liberal area to one that is balanced for this reason. Now, I can openly, in mixed company, call the NYTimes a Democrat party propaganda rag (I've read it every day for fifty years, still do) and no one jumps down my throat. Where I used to live, I would have found my tires slashed if I tried to do that.
