Lithuanian Railways has notified the Kaliningrad Railway of halting the transit of a number of goods subject to EU sanctions from Saturday, Governor of the region Anton Alikhanov said.

"We believe that this is a gross violation of the protocols for the accession to the EU of the Baltic states, the rules of free transit," he wrote in his Telegram channel.

According to him, from 40 to 50 percent of nomenclature cargo, including building materials, cement and metals, fell under the restrictions. To compensate for the damage, it will be necessary to urgently put new ships, including various bulk carriers, on the Ust-Luga-Baltiysk line, the governor added.

The official noted that the cost of logistics will increase, which may force the region to apply for federal subsidies.

Alikhanov also stressed that the authorities of the region are consulting with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other departments in order to "get clarifications from the European Commission, to get the right clarifications."

In recent months, a tense transport situation has developed on the Russian-Lithuanian border in the Kaliningrad region. So, several times at the border crossings, queues of trucks for several hundred cars gathered.
