Calgary

in Paper in my Pocket22 hours ago

So, for those who don't know, I was back 'home' in Calgary a couple weeks back. The primary reason for it was a funeral (my dad's), but I did take the opportunity to Get Out and Do Things (tm). I hadn't been back since 2007. It was good. It was fun. And, of course, I have some pictures. Here are some of Calgary itself.

This first is some random office tower. What I like is the reflection of the Calgary Tower in the windows. Snazzy.

I'm not entirely sure I know what these next two sculptures are about; it's art, and art is personal, so I'll leave this up to you.

Here's a few from the observation deck of the Calgary Tower. This was pretty neat; it's 360 degrees and, now, also has a glass balcony where one can look straight down. Yeah, it's pretty unnerving.

Speaking of the Calgary Tower, here it is from the outside. Once upon a time this was the tallest manmade structure in western Canada. It is not, anymore, but it still an iconic building and part of the Calgary psyche.

Some quick notes about the tower:

  • It was a founding member of the World Federation of Great Towers
  • The antenna on top of the tower is used for local emergency responders communication
  • The tower was the model for the 1988 Winter Olympic torches for the torch relay. Further, the top of the Tower itself had a natural gas feed installed; it was lit during the 1988 Winter Olympics as a massive olympic torch, and is still lit during Olympic Games.

While wandering Stephen Avenue Mall I came across this really awesome sculpture of a horse, comprised of what looks like discarded metal. Of course, the Tower is in the background. One can see the glass balcony at the top.

And, just to finish this missive off, here are some random shots. The architecture in Calgary is quite impressive, with kinetic sculptures, building front art and, quite frankly, some really good looking buildings.
